The source of the Grand Hotel ~~From 1952 to the present
The Grand Hotel was founded in 1952, and has gone through the radical changes among the tripartite relations of the mainland, Taiwan and the United States. In the second “Chen Jiang meeting”, the “Three Direct Links” across the Taiwan Straits, an across the era agreement was signed at the Grand Hotel.
In 1901, Japanese started architectural work on a large scale, built the Taiwan shrine as an important shrine. After World War II, the already destroyed shrine was dismantled and rebuilt at the same site into Taiwan Hotel; in 1952, through the "Taiwan Friendship Association Foundation", which composed by Mrs. Jiang Song Meiling and other dignitaries, the hotel name was changed to the Grand Hotel. On October 10, 1973, designed by the architect, Yang Zhuocheng, the new 14-floor Chinese palace-style building was completed, and the Grand Hotel became a landmark in Taipei then. In 1968, the Grand Hotel also won the accreditation from the U.S. Fortune magazine as one of the world's top ten hotels too!
At the earliest time, the Taiwan Hotel was run by manager He Shigeng, and during the three years operation, the business had been going smoothly, but on May 9, 1952, he received a notice from the general manager, Li Youfu, asking him to handle the transfer procedures, because Mr. Li Youfu considered that the operation of Taiwan Hotel needed to be separated. Then after over night rush work, the turn-over detailed list was completed, and the business registration was transferred to Xu Runxun, and thus, the “Taiwan Hotel” became the “Grand Hotel”.
The present Grand Hotel presents to the people in the world, a traditional Chinese beauty, and it becomes not only our common assets in Taiwan, but also our pride, hope that the heritage of the Grand Hotel will pass down continuously, and let more people know what she has gone through in the past.
