The history of Yuanshan ~~ historical background (Taiwan shrine)

The earliest Taiwan shrine building plan was proposed by Nogi Maresuke, the third assigned Taiwan governor in the Japanese rule period. In 1897, the initial selected locations, in addition to Taipei, Keelung and Tainan were alternate candidates.

Finally, Taipei was determined as the site for the governor’s proposal of building the Taiwan shrine owing to Taipei being the center of governing, at first, Yuanshan besides Keelung river was chosen as the site, but, due to Goto considered the pattern was too small to show the majesty of Japanese rule, and finally Jiantan mountain was chosen was chosen as the site.

The construction started at the time when the fourth governor Kodama Gentaro assumed his post, and the period was called “Kodama-Goto period”.

 

In the strong work style of the governor office, land relocations, fund raising and all difficulties were eliminated. The construction of Taiwan shrine were started in February 1901 and finished on September 26, with floor size of 3890 ping, land size of 260,000 square meters, construction expenses of 310,900 yuan.

 

On October 24, 1901, the completion inauguration of Taiwan shrine was held. For the needs of accommodating the royal member, the constructing governor’s residence (the present Taipei guest house) was used as “royal accommodating place”. For receiving Princess Yosihisa, the constructing of governor’s residence was specially pull ahead to complete on September 26.
