A Brief Introduction to Reader’s Theater
In order to boost student motivation to study English, Wanhe has been trying various approaches. Reader’s Theater is one of them. We help students understand the drama and have them work as voice actors to present the story. In order to make it look more like a play, the school rented costumes for students and invited My Culture Connect’s news team to record our show for the English Reader’s Theater Competition. The 2014 Cyberfair team observed how Luke instructed the student actors and actresses and we witnessed improvement in their acting skills.

On November 26, 2013 we were going to record the show for our English Reader’s Theater. At first I was excited about it, but after I saw the camera, I froze. It was the first time I did this, so I was very nervous.
When I walked into the audio-visual room, Winnie said I looked cute in my monkey costume, which made me more confident, though I still felt a little nervous. Then Luke and Kevin started to record our show. When we did it the first time, I was so nervous that I almost said the wrong line. We made it, but our teacher said there were many things to work on. We took a break to calm down a little. When we did it the second time, I was less nervous. Even though we improved, we needed to do better. We did it more than ten times. We felt very tired, but we kept on practicing. It was OK if we did not win, as long as we did our best. My dad told me that as long as we did our best, we would be successful. I think that makes good sense. His words made me more confident.

After we were finished, our teacher Leo showed us Luke’s schedule books. One note in one of the books impressed me. It was left by Luke’s daughter for him. It reads, “Dad, you should take a break more.” I was touched by her words, because I realized that Luke worked so hard every day.
Due to all the support people gave to us, I became less and less nervous. I would like thank our teachers, Winnie and Jessie, for teaching us the lines during the lunch break. I also appreciate Luke and Kevin’s help with the recording. I hope our efforts will pay off.

Reader’s Theater and an Interview with Luke by Yi-Hsin Tsai

Today we recorded our English show, for a Reader’s Theater competition, and then conducted an interview with Luke. First, we rehearsed our show. Luke and Kevin videotaped our performance. During the recording process we were a little nervous, but then we got used to it. We did it 8 times before our teachers said it was good enough.

It was a lot of work on our part. Luke and Kevin, who videotaped us, worked even harder. Time flew! It was already lunch time. We took a break. The Cyberfair team ate lunch with Luke, Kevin, and Susan in the principal’s office. We asked Luke why he became a vegetarian. Luke said that we should not see animals as our food and destroy the balance of our eco-system. He became a vegetarian for his health, too. It was so cool! Then the director of academic and student affairs made coffee for us. It smelled good. After chatting and eating lunch with them, I put on my monkey costume again for the recording. We took some photos with the teachers. Someday, when we see these pictures again, it will be great.

Luke has not had a smooth life’s path, but he has faced his challenges with courage. He shared a lot of his life stories. He told me not to think about yourself. The best path in life is to live a selfless life. If you do something for yourself, that’s a selfish act. But if you do something for the benefits of others, that’s a selfless act. I think everybody has difficult moments in their lives. You should trust in your ability to make changes. Luke offered us a great example of this.
