Interviews with Susan Lin, Kevin Yu, and Mike Dishnow

Interviews with Susan Lin, Kevin Yu, and Mike Dishnow by Yi-Hsin Tsai
On Tuesday, November 20th, we interviewed one of Luke’s foreign associates at Luke’s studio. We were looking forward to asking Grandpa Mike questions. Although we were nervous, we did our best.
I asked Grandpa Mike two questions and my classmate Hsin-tse asked him one. Grandpa Mike is one of My Culture Connect’s international volunteers. He talks to students in Changhua on a regular basis. He visited Taiwan in 2012 and 2013. During his stay in Taiwan, Luke, Susan and Kevin took care of him. Grandpa Mike regards Luke as his Taiwanese son. He studied Mandarin with Luke. When Grandpa Mike tried hard and said “thanks for your hard work” in Mandarin, we thought he was really good.

After the interview, Mike told us in English that we have a great principal and teachers. He also said that we worked hard and did very well. He told us to keep up the good work. Then he took out an electronic translator that could translate an English expression into Mandarin and pronounce it. Grandpa Mike followed the translator and said, “My name is Mike.” After we heard that, we clapped. He said thank you in Mandarin.
I learned a lot from the interviews. I got to listen to many ideas about life. Grandpa’s lifelong learning and Luke’s Skype session project are very impressive. These two men are really good role models.

Interviews with Ms. Susan Lin and Mr. Kevin Yu by Chi-lian Hong
Today we visited Teacher Susan Lin and Teacher Kevin because they always travel to different schools with Luke to help him with an activity or shooting videos. We were curious about what they thought of Luke. Susan first met Luke when she would take her daughter to sit in Luke’s English class at the Ming Harng Temple. Kevin came to know Luke because Luke was his private tutor a long time ago. They both said they learned a lot from Luke.

Besides his class for young children, Luke started a study group to help adult learners with CNN news. Susan teaches English at a cram school and she joined the group to help herself improve her English. She said she was influenced by Luke in many ways. One of them was to keep improving English. It was not our native language, so we had to keep studying to gain more functional ability.

Kevin said that Luke needed a tech-savvy person. He thought he just wanted to help him for a while and now ten years have passed. In order to help us know more about Luke, Kevin gave us a list of Luke’s characteristics: perseverance, tenacity, adventurousness, courage, and selflessness.

We were very happy about our interviews because we got to know more about Luke. Kevin joked around to help ease our anxiety. We understood Luke better after Susan and Kevin shared their stories. Luke was really a man of perseverance and enthusiasm. He put public good above his own family. There was one thing I learned from him: you have to keep trying or you’ll fail.
