I think that books are just like children. They need a suitable space to breath. We also hope that our bookstore can have a long term relationship with our customers. During the process of opening the bookstore, we had to overcome some financial difficulties and continue givin our customers new things.

I have been running a bookstore for a long time so I think I have visited all of them in Taiwan. I actually admire a lot of foreign bookstores too. They have a different culture and local resources to that of our own. We need to look at how others run their bookstores and improve ourselves.

The Importance of Bookstores

The happiest thing about opening a bookstore is sharing. We can learn from each other and take things from each others experience. I can also do what I love to do in the bookstore, make friends and introduce Taiwanese culture.

If you want to open a bookstore, first ask yourself if you are ready. If you aren’t, then please DON’T DO IT! Otherwise you will face too many setbacks and not be able to overcome them.

I have found out that running a bookshop is really not an easy task. I truly admire the founder of the Small Small Bookshop as well as the other bookshop’s managers. They never gave up when they ran into problems. To be able to keep an independent bookstore open, it takes more than passion and personal interest; it takes perseverance, hard work and being undeterred in the face of challenges and difficulties. In addition, using imagination and constant innovation to establish its own unique style is the key to a successful and sustainable indie bookstore.
