Visiting Bookstores

On the independent bookstores map, we found that Taiwan has many independent bookstores. Each of these bookstores has it’s own unique qualities. Because of this we decided to spend a day in our winter vacation to visit 3 of them.

Bookstore Visit

Date:01/18/2013 | Location:Shulin Bookstore, Xiabeichi Bookstore, Tianyuan Citylife Bookstore and Youhe Bookstore
Participants:Joanna, Sabrina, Angela, Tianne, Belle, Lucy, Eddy, Andrew, Ray and Eva

Preparation

The Yu-Tsai Bookworms were looking at the map of bookstores and preparing for their trip to look around them. In order to visit as many bookstores in one, we looked at the map and planned a route.

After discussing with everyone, we choose four bookstores to visit. Happily we called each of the stores to arrange a visit. Each of the owners were more than happy to oblige.

Activity Diary

First Stop:Shulin Bookstore

The first stop was the Shulin Bookstore inside a bit office building. The homely bookstore was split into different areas. The most special aspect is that they have children’s books in other languages! Before we left, we were given special bookmarks and 3-D calendars by the store manager!

Second Stop:Xiabeichi Bookstore

Xiabeichi Bookstore is more Japanese in style than the other two. Inside it is full of Japanese and other foreign language books.
The manager said that these books were all imported from abroad! Each of us were given a book by the store clerk to remember our visit here!

Third Stop: Tianyuan Citylife Bookstore

At the third bookstore, the shelves that hold the books were especially made from farmers woven baskets! Most of the books are about art and architecture.
Throughout the store are small pieces of artwork, and in the basement there is even a small gallery for artists to display their work. Very special!

Fourth Stop: Youhe Bookstore

This bookstore is located beside the river in Danshui on the second floor.
It’s small, relaxing and even has a coffee bar and cat just like Small Small! Most of the books here are about literature, film, travel and ecology.

Bookworms Big Discovery – There are many small small

I think it is important for every bookstore to have its own special characteristics. For example, the stunning view of the Tamsui River is what sets the Youhe Bookstore apart from others. Shulin Bookstore’s vast collection of children’s books and Tianyuan Citylife Bookstore’s creative products makes them very different to the Small Small Bookshop and to each other. Not only do they sell different books, but the way they display and present the books are not the same. So, every bookstore has a special style which is what makes independent bookstores interesting.

Not only were the kinds of book available in the bookshops weren’t the same, the whole feeling of the bookshops are also not the same.
Small Small has a feeling of home, while that feeling of Xiabeichi Bookstore gave to me, is just like, you’ve come to a new world, because it didn’t have the cozy atmosphere of Small Small, but it owned a kind of unique new Japanese style. The differences between Tianyuan Citylife Bookstore and Small Small, other than the area were, and the furnishings. Tianyuan Citylife Bookstore gives me a kind of new independent bookstores style feelings.Youhe Bookstore and Small Small have a lot of similarities. Their areas were both small, and both sold afternoon tea snacks. The most interesting of all was that, is they both have cute cats.
