Face Painting Activity

1.Motive and Purpose

The masks originated from the ancient exorcise culture. In general, each Shenjiang statue has its features and painting on the face (such as General Gan, General Liu, General Qi, and General Ba). We would like to let students on campus understand the facial features of Shenjiang statues through this activity. Even though we can not go through every single statue’s face during the activity, the students would be attracted to Shenjiang faces through face painting. We would like to bring up more students’ interest and encourage them to explore through this activity.

2.Activity Procedure

The activity for today is learning face painting for Shenjiang statues. Originally, we thought we needed to paint directly onto the statue. We had a similar experience before when we painted on classmates’ faces; it was very fun. This time, we were going to do face painting differently. Mr. Ling-chuan Wang from the Forbidden City Museum in Luzhou would come to teach us how to paint the faces. We used watercolor and watercolor brushes to paint the faces. Our teacher had already prepared the faces for us. These faces were white and were without any painting on them. We started to paint after Teacher Wang’s instructions. This class was really fun. We could paint the faces while listening to Shenjiang stories and the features of each face.

When Teacher Wang was teaching the class, we were very nervous. We first drew a draft with pencils. Mine was so ugly. Teacher Wang praised the drawing of Cheng-you Yao, saying that it was as good as a real one. My drawing was far from Teacher Wang’s drawing. I admired Teacher Wang for being able to finish a beautiful face painting in 5 minutes. I feel like a god if I could draw as well as Teacher Wang.

Lined up to prepare to draw on the mask.
