Culture Transmission> Questionnaire Survey

Questionnaire Survey

1.Motive and Purpose

We want to see the effect of the promotion, through questionnaires, and how much the students understand the Luzhou Shenjiang culture. We will then use these as reference for planning future promotions for Luzhou Shenjiang culture activities. Our team utilized class breaks to brainstorm the following questions and collected internet questionnaires from 1195 persons. Our procedure and analysis are as follows:

Shenjiang activities are coming to an end. We have discussed with the instructor to see if such dense promotion for Luzhou Shenjiang culture was effective or not? 3.Analysis of statistical results

The questionnaire requires being printed-out for student to fill up their answers. We would like to get answers from more students, then lots of paper would be wasted. We decided to use an online questionnaire from Google Doc instead. The computer teacher spent 5 hours in the class to make the questionnaire for us. There were 1195 students who responded to our questionnaires. Most of them were 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Our statistics results are as follows:

Basic Information: Grade?

There were 81 3rd graders, 286 4th graders, 500 5th graders, and 328 6th graders participating in the online questionnaire. The reason 1st and 2nd graders didn’t participate, was because they don’t have a computer class to work on our online questionnaire. Besides, they are still young, and most of them don’t know how to operate computers. Therefore, the samples for them were missing.

Basic Information: Gender?

There were 609 males and 586 females who participated in this survey. This time we did the online questionnaire by using a general survey, so the proportional variance between male and female was small. There are 51% males and 49% female at school, so the proportion is about the same.

Q1: Do you know the theme for Lujiang Elementary School to participate 2013 Cyberfair?

From the survey we have learned that 536 persons (44.9%) know the subject, and 659 persons (55.1%) do not know. This means that more than half of the students do not know about our activities. Possible reasons are: Promotion was not dense enough, plus there are too many activities at school, and our promotion encountered the examination week of school. The results show that students are not clear about out research subject. If there is a chance to improve, we hope to arrange the promotion activities into the weeks that have fewer activities at school. We should also invite teachers from other classes to participate in our promotion.

Q2: Would you like to learn Luzhou Shenjiang culture after listening to the promotion of activities?

482 persons (40.3%) agreed, 86 persons (7.2%) were OK, and 672 persons (52.5%) disagreed. This result is out of our expectation. 52.5% of students do not want to understand Luzhou Shenjiang culture after listening to our promotion. After our discussion, possible reasons are: 1) People feel Shenjiang culture is a religion, so other believers do not want to contact this. 2) Most students are still not interested in Shenjiang culture. Even after our promotion, more than half of the students still do not want to learn about this. We are surprised and disappointed, but we must think about this from a different perspective. The reason we picked this subject is because the Shenjiang culture is dying. We promote it since people do not pay attention to it anymore. Now, close to half of students are willing to learn. We think this is worthwhile.

Q3: How do you know the activity information of 2013 Cyberfair?

284 (23.8%) persons were informed by teacher, family and friends, 468 (39.2%) persons knew this from school website, and 443 persons (37.1%) learned this from school promotion. Most of the students spend more time on the computer, so it is easier for them to know from the school website. Also, we have uploaded our teaching video onto the school home page; so many of them may have already seen this. That’s why the school website and school promotion take the majority of the answers. On the contrary, fewer students were informed by their teachers, family, or friends. A possible reason is that most people are still not clear about Shenjiang culture. If we can teach them more about it, they should be more willing to help promote this.

Q4: Do you know Luzhou only had eight Shenjiang statues originally?

442 persons (37%) knew, but 753 persons (63%) were not clear about this. Most students do not know Luzhou originally had 8 sets of Shenjiang statues. The main reasons are: 1) Most people are not clear about Luzhou Shenjiang culture or its history, so they don’t know anything about 8 sets of statues. 2) There are almost 100 classes at school, and we can only do the promotion for some classes. For the larger promotions, we could not take care of all the students; this is why the information was not obvious.

Q5: Do you know Luzhou has the highest density of Shenjiang statues in Taiwan?

436 persons (36.5%) knew, while 759 persons (63.5%) were not clear about this. Most of the students cannot believe that a small town like Luzhou could have such a highest density of Shenjiang statues. Also, when we did the promotion, we did not clearly tell people the total amount of Shenjiang statues in Luzhou, and also did not compare with other areas. That’s why most people do not know this fact. If we have the chance, we will promote this to let people know.

Q6: Have you seen Shenjiang statues displayed in Luzhou temple worships?

877 (73.4%) people have seen it, and 318 (26.6%) people were not sure about it. There are many Shenjiang statues participating in patrol tours of temple festivals in Luzhou. Many parents will take their kids to view the parades, so most people have seen Shenjiang statues. Also Shenjiang patrol tours are always accompanied with loud Beiguan and Nanguan music, so many people hear the music and come out to see the parade, and also learn the fact that Shenjiang statues show up on temple worship parade.

Q7: Do you know Shenjiang patrol tours are meant to expel demons and pray for good fortune?

768 persons (64%) knew this, and 427 persons (35.7%) were not clear. In religious beliefs, gods expel demons and bring good fortune for people who pray for it. Shenjiang are a kind of god, so people naturally believe that Shenjiang would do the same thing.

Q8: How do you feel about Shenjiang statues?

919 persons (76.9%) respect them, 73 persons (6.1%) feel scared, and 203 persons (17%) think they are funny. Because Shenjiang appearances are tall and mighty, many people tend to respect them and dare not to offend them. Also, many people respect gods, so they respect Shenjiang too.

Q9: Do you like Shenjiang performances?

803 people (67.2%) answered yes, 206 people (17.2%) answered no, and 186 people (15.6%) do not care. Most of the Shenjiang patrol tours are lively and noisy; participating groups always show off their best Shenjiang dances to compete with others. Therefore, a lot of people are attracted to them every time. This is why most people like Shenjiang performances.

Q10: If there were a chance, would you like to try to operate a Shenjiang statue?

660 persons (55.2%) would like to try, and 533 persons (44.6%) would not like to try it. Shenjiang statues look powerful and mighty, and most people feel curious, so they would like to try it. Another 44.6% of people do not want to try it probably because of the huge size and the big weight of the statues. Also, many people respect gods and do not want to touch them, and would like to just view their performance instead.

Q11: Through the promotion at school, which Shenjiang gods do you know? Please write out one Shenjiang name.

Most people know General Qi, General Ba, Third Prince, Qinliyan, Shunfenger, Samgharama, General Gan Hui, General Chi-Gon Wei, Yinyangsi, General Wen, Longnu, Zhongkui, General Ma, and Erlangshen. Most of people think Bajiajiang is a kind of Shenjiang; this is wrong. In fact, they only have a similar face painting. Bajiajiang is not a Shenjiang god. Students have mentioned most of the Shenjiang statues seen in Luzhou.

Q12: If you want to introduce Luzhou’s local features to your friend, what would you do?

Most of the students answered: Luzhou Shenjiang culture, Luzhou traditional market, Luzhou Yonglian Temple, noodle soup, temples, and Lee’s historical house. These are all famous features in Luzhou. Most people also suggested Luzhou Shenjiang Culture though. I think it’s because of our promotion, which awakened people’s recognition. All students agree that Shenjiang Culture is a unique culture in Luzhou.

Q13: How do you think we should continue to develop and preserve Luzhou Shenjiang culture?

Many students have suggested that we promote and develop the culture in these directions:   1) We should hold more activities and get media to help promote the culture. We can even perform Shenjiang dances in other countries for foreigners to learn; 2) Add related information about Shenjiang Culture into Luzhou tour guidebook; 3) Make films or compile drawing to be published; 4) Establish a Shenjiang culture museum; 5) Promote on the Internet. Set up Fan Groups on Facebook or promote on Youtube; 6) Integrate with commercial resources. Dolls, mug, clothes, or some toys can be printed with lovely Shenjiang pictures.
