3.Water Quality Improvement

Problem Encountered : Various Pollutions in the water courses and ponds along the Caogong Canal

Within the modern society, we should focus on the aspects to improve urban hydrological and environmental pollution. However, almost all ponds along the Caogong Canal are vanished by land filling only except the Lotus Pond surviving finally. Other ponds are vanished by land filling, polluted by garbage on river banks, illegally occupied by citizens, utilized for vegetable and poultry cultivation with droppings emitted to rivers and badly deteriorated the water quality of the Caogong Canal.

Solution : Water Quality Improvement

The irrigating water quality drawn by the Caogong Canal from the Kao-Ping Stream is still acceptable. However, due to the downstream pollution and bottom slur accumulated for a long time, the canal water is now badly polluted. After dredge, it can be well improved through man-made wetlands and small-scaled facilities. Thus, it is recommended that the renovation plan should disregard the concepts about the interception of river branches or large-scaled waste water processing factories. However, it is plausible to enhance the establishment of waste water sewers and the river bank lands can be collected for scattering and small-scaled waste water processing facilities or man-madel water-purifying wetlands. The processed water can be recycled into rivers. About water purifying by means of small community ponds and waste water processing facilities, the recommendable sites are listed as below:

  1. The water processed by the Jong Lung Waste Water Processing Factory can be firstly purified by artificial wetlands and lakes and the water can be led into the Fong Shan Stream.
  2. A class A water purifying facility can be established on the northern part of the Indigenous Plant Garden, which intersected with another water course within the High Speed Railway fields. Also, the slur can be dredged to improve water quality.
  3. An man-made wetland site can be established in the downstream area of Fong Shan Stream along the lands belongs to Taisugar so that a water-friendly space can be allotted and water quality can be well improved.

Reflection

When we were in our field-investigation, we witnessed a stinking river around a temple of the god of earth in Naio Song Township. As local inhabits' saying, the pollution is caused by reduced water volume but increased household waste water. Thus, the water quality is worsened all the more. We also experienced the same image on Feng Shan Stream, a stinking and badly polluted brook. It is because the waste water emitted by some upstream factories is led to this brook. Thus, this brook is finally stinking and badly polluted. Observing aforesaid situations, we find Caogong Canal is profoundly polluted and it is necessary to renovate it. If the water of the Caogong Canal can be clean and clear, its branches will naturally become the deep beloved beautiful streams.
