Kaohsiung City, the second biggest city in
Taiwan, is transforming from an industrial city to a fragrant
waterfront city. To welcome the world games in 2009, Kaohsiung
City Government has lunched a series of construction projects,
expecting to build an "ocean capital city."
"Caogong Canal", located in Kaohsiung plain in southern
Taiwan, is known internationally as one of the top four canals
in Taiwan with high efficiency and scale in irrigation. KaoPing
Stream is the main water resource for Caogong Canal. The irrigation
scale of it ranges from Kaohsiung county to Kaohsiung city nowadays,
north to Lotus Pond irrigation system. Caogong Canal plays an
important role in connecting the big ponds between Kaohsiung city
and county such as Lotus Pond, Chouchai Wetland, Chinshih (Golden
Lion) lake, etc, which form a plentiful water web. Furthermore,
it not only enriches the material and spiritual life of residents
on the canal front, but also forms special features of cultural
views in small villages.
Recently, as the changes of society, the precious landscapes and
resources of Caogong Canal are gradually declining with the decrease
of agriculture. To continue the meanings and vitality of it, we
have to take actions to restore the waterfront of Caogong Canal,
and transform the traditional resource role of agricultural that
Caogong Canal had played into an environmental one.
To restore the water web of Caogong Canal, the construction of
Wetland Ecological Corridor in Kaohsiung is a very important act
that must be taken. The range of Wetland Ecological Corridor includes
Neiweipei Wetland, Banhe Village Flood Detention Pond, Chouchai
Wetland, Jhongdu (Central Urban) Love River Wetland, Yanshuei
(Salty Water) Port Wetland, Banping Lake Wetland, and Yuanjhong
Port Wetland, etc. We estimate that the restoration will make
the basin of Caogong Canal reveal a new look of fragrant waterfront,
and provide residents with a whole new water-accessible area.
In the mean while, they are also abundant in living, ecology,
and vitality in Kaohsiung urban areas of southern Taiwan.
3. Summary
of Our Project
"Caogong Canal" is a canal excavated
by people 170 years ago. The county magistrate, Cao Jin, aroused
people to excavate the canal in order to resolve the drought problem.
After building, the water irrigated the whole Kaohsiung plain
widely. The canal not only resolved the dry problem, but also
made Fong Shan County become an important rice warehouse in Kaohsiung
at that time.
Up to now, Caogong Canal not only keeps the irrigation function,
but also makes Kaohsiung City, regarded as an agricultural society
in earlier period of Taiwan, transform into the "Ocean Capital
City" with prosperous industries and business.
However, due to the social changes, Caogong Canal is declining
gradually during the urbanization process. In recent years, the
Kaohsiung City Government authorities realize the importance of
the realignment of a river and start to utilize the Caogong Canal
water system lively. They¡¦ve been making efforts to integrate
the resources of the paddling culture, ecosystem, sightseeing,
recreation, and push the idea of the ecological corridors to create
a brand-new appearance of fragrance waterfront.
After all, what kind of problems does the Caogong Canal face now?
Are there any possible solutions to these problems? What are the
new construction projects launched by the Kaohsiung City Government
authorities for beautification and afforestation? As elementary
school students, can we make some contribution for our society
in protecting the wetly ecosystem environment? There are detailed
introductions and explains in our topic.
4. Additional
comments concerning our computer and Internet access
In school, we surf the Internet
through fiber-optic
system, and the speed of uploading and downloading is 100
MB. There are seven computers in our classroom. Each of them
can access to the Internet through the specific line, and is able
to get all kinds of Internet services through the server, that
is, the connection works very well. Each one of us has an E-mail
account, and it has become the most important way for us to communicate
with other people when we are working on subject research. In
addition, we fully use the Internet service in our computer classroom,
and through the shared platform, our teacher can put together
all the information we get swiftly. It is not only convenient,
but helps us to save lots of time.
We
searched for the information on the Internet, typed our reports,
and uploaded the research journals during group course.
Every
computer in the classroom played an important role in our
research. The shared hard disk on the Internet really helps
a lot.
During
the period of web page designing training program, Mr. Zheng
was the best counselor when we have difficulties.
5.Problems
We Had to Overcome
(1) The pressure
of the time limits:
We decided to sign up for the contest in the
middle of November, which was two months later than other teams,
we experienced extremely hard time during the progress of our research.
Nevertheless, we supported each other. In every classroom study,
field study, and activity, we all participated with passion, and
produced journals and feedback on research immediately. Then, we
had to rearrang our schedule during winter vacation to make the
bulletin board to help the community. Last, to set up the website
was a real challenge for us.
(2) To decide the topic of the website
is not a simple thing to do:
The Caogong Canal was the mother canal that
flows through the Kaohsiung plain, and is also the main idea of
our research. Compares to the government¡¦s cleaning up and rebuilding
the downstream of the Caogong Canal, and the setting up of the ecological
corridor which make the city takes on an entirely new look, the
headstream of the Caogong Canal within Kaohsiung County has been
ignored for a long time. Therefore, we would like to speak out
the problem people should learn about. We have been discussing about
the framework and the content of our website for a long time. The
Caogong Canal and the Wetland Ecological Corridor seem to be two
independent subjects, and how to connect two of them logically is
a big problem. Besides, how should we transfer the subject of the
present situation of the Caogong Canal to the ecological corridor
in Kaohsiung City? After the discussion, we made a decision of
taking the Caogong Canal as the main idea of our research. Because
there is the Caogong Canal, there is the cleaning up and rebuilding
of the downstream. Moreover, for the government has been attaching
importance to the downstream of the Caogong Canal, and has accomplished
some projects very well, it would show the need for the government
of Kaohsiung County to put efforts on restoration. That is, to
have better the water quality of the Caogong Canal is the method
to get at the root to dredge it. Consequently, we started from the
history and the present situation of the Caogong Canal, then the
rebirth and recycling of the Caogong Canal. Furthermore, we would
introduce all the construction and development of our government
which would include the Wetland Ecological Corridor. In the end,
we would like to call upon the government¡¦s attention to the restoration
of the Caogong Canal which is the only way to recover the beautiful
scenery of the Caogong Canal .
(3) The arrangement and the presentation of content
in our website¡G
This time, we study on the continuous subject
of ¡§The responsible official and a historic river. When drinking
water, think of its source¡XA story about Cao Jin and Caocong Canal.¡¨in
2005. Mainly we would talk about the present situation of the Caogong
Canal and the trouble we might have when we work on the rebirth.
To go a step further, we would introduce the new face of Kaohsiung
City and the achievements on setting up the Wetland Ecological Corridor.
Though, parts of topics have been discussed before, we still have
tough challenge on connect each independent subject together, and
also on the skill to put things together when select and present
the content of our website. The rebirth of the Caogong Canal is
a task. Fortunately, there were some professionals to help us solve
problems, such as Mr. Wen-chien Zheng, manager of fengshan literature
and history office, and Miss. Yi-chen Hsieh, the executive officer
of Wetlands Taiwan Organization. They provided lots of information and received
the interviews. All these help us get the key points and express
by our own words. In addition, some paintings by our classmate
make our website colorful and cheery.
(4) Some communicative problems¡G
Because most of our interviewees are Taiwanese-speaking senior citizens,
when we went out for field-investigation, we really had certain
difficulties on communication. Fortunately, we brought tapes when
interviewing, recorded all words, and listening carefully afterwards.
We asked our parents when we couldn¡¦t understand and put our notes
in order. Though we spent lots of time on processing, we really
learn a lot on Taiwanese language and culture.
(5) Traffic problems when we need to out for
interviews¡G
Because the research program is participated
by 26 of us, that is, all of us in the class, we have the traffic
problem when we out for field-investigation. To solve the problem,
we gave parents notices to know how many people could help the transportation.
Best of all, we have many hot-tempered parents to give us a ride.
This time, we have four all-day-long field-investigations to do,
and the service in return at Chouchai Wetland on the World Wetlands
Day. Parents experienced all these with their children from beginning
to end. Even though our cars were scratched by bushes in the field
and the antenna
was broken, we did it in the long run.
(6) The inefficiency of
art designing ability¡G
In the process of learning designing web page, the art designing
ability impresses readers on the first sight. After about 2 years'
learning process, we are more familiar with some web-page-designing
software, such as Frontpage, Fireworks and DreamWeaver, but we still
have problems on the presentation of beauty. To make up our inefficiency,
we were hiring a profession again to teach us some skills of art
designing ability. After series of training program, we advanced
both our esthetic sensibilities and designing ability. Besides,
under the instruction, we use Swish, an animation-designing software,
as the films under some subjects which works very well.
(7) Part of pictures were hard to get¡G
The point of our first part research is to present the problems
of the Caogong Canal these days and the process of the rebirth of
the Caogong Canal. The script of this part was most difficult of
all and we can¡¦t have the pictures at the moment when issues happened,
so we call for experts¡¦ help. With the permission of Miss. Yi-chen
Hsieh, we cited some pictures she collected to show the problems
of the Caogong Canal. Furthermore, our teacher was trying to avoid
the content of the rebirth of the Caogong Canal becomes too stiff
to understand, so she flashed on a painting contest in order to
push us brainstorm about the wonderful scene after the rebirth completed.
All these paintings are requiring much attention and concern and
were our painstaking efforts. On the part of the wetland ecological
corridor, due to the difficulty to obtain some firsthand ichnograph form books, our paintings show the idea with illustration clearly.
This kind of presentation adds more fun to our website.
6.Reflection¡G
In the beginning of our research program,
we were totally have no idea what Wetland Ecological Corridor
was, and knew about Cao Jin only by text book which gave limited
information. But after the four months¡¦ learning progress, through
field-investigation, interviewing on the scene, data collection,
and research on subjects, we have learned a lot through this project.
In the whole, we walked through the basin of the Caogong Canal
when out for field-investigation, and the differences between
the headstream and downstream of the Caogong Canal shocked us.
While interviewing the Public Works Department and visiting the
place, we were deeply impressed by the efforts the government
made for the downstream of the Caogong Canal. We should treasure
the environment and protect it.
To show our appreciation to people who give us instruction and
support, we were the tour commentators for Chouchai Wetland on the World
Wetlands Day, and gave a presentation to the guests about how
to protect wetland. We hope people pay more attention on the
present situation of the Caogong Canal and treasure the world
of nature. After these months of hard-working, we actually learned
abundant knowledge and experience.
All
of us, including teachers and parents, listened carefully
to the tour guide before going on a field trip.
We
have supportive parents to drive us in every time field-investigation,
so we could complete our program smoothly.
Interviewing
with local people made us speak Taiwanese more fluently.
¡» Project
Elements
1. How did your activities and research for this International
Schools CyberFair project support content standards, required coursework
and curriculum requirements?
Through this project, we had experienced
the cross-subject learning, school-based curriculum, and the everlasting
ability.
During the research process, we used the Internet, read a lot of related
books for reference, and also we visited the Caogong Canal Basin,
exploring more about the downstream and the Wetland Ecological Corridor.
The skill of computer graphing helped us produce a interactive map,
introducing the Wetland Ecological Corridor of Kaohsiung City thoroughly.
The way we combined the technology, langusge, and local geography
fitted in the concepts of curriculum integration and cross-subject
learning.
In addition, for the school-based curriculum, we chose the Caogong
Canal which was the mother river of Kaohsiung and is close to all
citizens in Kaohsiung. Through this research, we knew not only about
the history of the Caogong Canal, but also its problems under the
change of society. Compared to the newly built Banhe Village Flood
Detention Pond, Golden Lion Lake, and Chouchai Wetland which are urban
wetlands model, the ignorance of the headstream is unfair. Therefore,
we are trying to show a series of the construction on the Wetland
Ecological Corridor of Kaohsiung City, and hope the governments of
Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County cooperate with each other on the
rebuilding of the Caogong Canal and the rebirth of the beauty. This
research shows the passion we have toward the hometown.
In this research, we have also learned how to collect information,
read and edit, carry out field-investigation, communicate with people,
interview, write scripts, take digital photography, operate the computer,
design web pages and bulletin bulletin boards, 6-paged pamphlet, and the skill
of computer graphing. Besides, we can not only receive the knowledge
but also come up with some feedback. Through the service in return,
we developed our communication ability. What mentioned above are everlasting
ability which we benefit a lot.
¡»What skills have you learned¡H
(1) Skills on collection and editing:
In the four months, under the instruction of our teacher, we
have learned to surf the Internet or read books to collect information.
After reading and editing, we wrote the articles ourselves.
(2) Skills on communication and interviewing¡G
In our research, we found the answers by interviewing. Before
our interview, we prepared questions and took notes. During interviewing,
we need to be aware of our manners and recorded the interview.
In the end, we wrote down scripts according to the tape. It was
part of learning.
(3) Skills on taking digital photography¡G
During the field-investigation, we brought our digital cameras
to take pictures or film everything we saw. We have been taught
the skills on photography. We used these skills and digitized
related photos and uploaded pictures into computer for further
classification. We edited these photos and films with Photoimpact.?
(4) Skills on website designing¡G
The website designing is an important lesson. We developed our
art designing ability under professional¡¦s instruction. We present
our reports by website and we also have learned how to edit pictures.
(5) Skills on speaking fluency¡G
Some journalists from the Public TV Station were with us whole
day long during field-investigation. We were interviewed by reporters
on TV. In the end of our research program, we joined the activity
of ¡§ True Love in Kaohsiung for the International Wetlands¡¦ Day¡¨held
by Public Works of Kaohsiung City and Wetlands Taiwan Organization. We worked
as tour commentators and information staffs in the activity. To explain
our research to people thoroughly, our teacher held a training
program and even a rehearsal. By this chance, we had the opportunity
to improve our communication ability and avoided stage fright,
and we also successfully drew people¡¦s attention to the present
situation and the outlook of the Caogong Canal.
While interviewing,
we had the chance to practice some skills. That¡¦s really fantastic.
We were
interviewed by reporters of Public TV Station, and talked
about our expectations to the rebirth of the Caogong Canal.
Through
the designing of the 6-paged pamphlet, we have raised the
issue about protecting the wetlands and the rivers.
¡» How was your team work¡H
Members of our group were from different classes,
and we had only seven days a week to gather together. Deducted some
professional courses, there was not much time for us to discuss and
share feeback. Even though, we had done our best to finish assignment.
All together, we have accomplished a lot.
The range of our research is extensive. We visited many places during
the field trips, and wrote lots of scripts. Under the pressure of the
preparation work for the International Wetlands¡¦ Day, we shared work
to ensure that every one could practice writing scripts and editing.
Everyone of us gave up the winter vacation and came to school checking
the coherence and editing the website. Our teacher assigned our work
according to our specialties, like writing, communication, graphing,
computer abilities. In this way, we cooperated with each other, and
completed our research.
¡» What specific ideas you have after the
research?
We have read our senior classmates¡¦ website before
we started the program, and acquired some basic ideas about the history
and achievement of Cao Jin. Then we found out that the Caogong Canal,
a mother river which nurtured the Kaohsiung plain for almost 170 years,
is waned by time and the downfall of agriculture. The significant irrigation
project has become smelling gutter and hid between lanes. Such a mess
strikes against the water quality improvement project of Kaohsiung City.
Therefore, to recover the beauty of the Caogong Canal, we have to support
the rebirth project on the Caogong Canal.
Aiming at the present situation and problems at
the headstream of the Caogong Canal, we offered some suggestions,? such
as rank elevation, water supplement, water quality improvement, wetlands
reproduction, embankment readjustment, instauration and exploitation,
landscape remodeling, landowning inspection, landscape reconstruction,
and system readjustment. Hope that our research can be understood and
supported by the government.
We can see the rebuilding of the downstream of the
Caogong Canal is strong contrast to that in headstream. What are the
new plans or plots to change industrial Kaohsiung City into a green
city with Fragrant River Banks?? Meanwhile, what is a wetland, or what
is a Wetland Ecological Corridor to people?? Through visiting places,
we compiled all information and introduced all wetlands¡¦ models form
different cities with a directory map.
The Caogong Canal is the source of top four river
in Kaohsiung¡XLove River, Cianjhen River, Fengshan River, and Hojin Creek.
Although the government has done the rebuilding of the downstream of
the Caogong Canal, but the headstream is still ignored. It doesn¡¦t get
at the root. To solve the problem, we have to rebuild and clean it
up as well like the downstream did. We hope through this exhibition,
people can get to know about the current condition and the importance
of rebuilding of the mother canal that nurtured the Kaohsiung plain
for nearly a hundred year.
Guided
tour along the Caogong Canal. We listened carefully on the history
and current condition.
We took notes
during out in field trips, and learned a lot.
We have thorough
understanding on the current condition of Caogong Canal and have
great expectation on its rebirth.
¡» How do you match up the need both of
your program and school demands?
Most of us live in Fengshan. We all know about
the Cao Jin Temple on Caogong Road, but don¡¦t know who he was. Not
to mention, to understand the current condition of the headstream of
the Caogong Canal. Besides, our school is near northern Kaohsiung where
rebuilding of the Banhe Village Flood Detention Pond, Chinshih Lake,
Chouchai Wetland, and Lotus Pond took place, but we have no idea of the
project of the Wetland Ecological Corridor.Through the set up of our
website and the directory map, people would get the chance to have more
understanding on the construction and achievement of our government.
We are not only helping the community get to know their culture, but
alos showing them the new face of Kaohsiung.
¡» What kind of roles had you played in your community¡H
During researching, we learned for knowledge we
have to acquire as learners, and we also posted some firsthand information
on the website as knowledge producers at the same time. Although we
were still young, we could join the activity held by city government
as narrators and information staffs and share our research to people.
Therefore, the roles we played in our community were the spokesmen for
our environment.
We made 17
bulletin boards to demonstrate our project on International Wetlands¡¦ day.
On that day,
we did all we can to explain the importance of the rebirth for the
Caogong Canal, and the new face of Kaohsiung.
Mayor Chen
Kiku came to listening our narration and showed her appreciation.
¡@¡» Do you think learning on the Internet is more effective than traditional
way?
Explain why and how.
Learning on the Internet, we could search for information
whenever we want and we could also discuss and share the feelings on
it. Our teacher could always gather our works through the Net. Best
of all, people can browse on our works as they wish, and it is totally
different from the traditional way of doing a research. Briefly, learning
on the Internet makes out team works better and more effective.

3. In what ways did your students act as
"ambassadors" and spokespersons for your International Schools
CyberFair project both on-line and in person.
To gain more backup knowledge and data to support
our research, we invited many professionals to give us lessons for specific
subjects. Like Mr. Wen-chien Zheng, manager of Fengshan Literature and
History Studio, gave us lecture about the history of Cao Jin and the
Caogong Canal, Miss Yi-chen Hsieh, the executive officer of Wetlands
Taiwan, explained the current condition of the Caogong Canal, and Mr.
Hsueh-hua Liu of Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society introduced some basic ideas
about wetlands and ecological environment. With all these information,
we had deeper impressions when we actually visit ourselves.
Mr. Wen-chien Zheng, manager of Fengshan Literature and History studio,
was the guide during the field-investigation. He provided us a variety
of information with his passion towards local culture education, and
also led us visiting the Caogong Canal basin. In addition, we have
invited director of Wetland Taiwan, Mr. Yao-ting Su, to evaluate the
possibility of constructing a wetland in school. Although we stopped
the program for the reason of budget and problems on construction, Mr.
Su introduced us to serve as commentators on the World Wetlands Day. What¡¦s
more, we interviewed the director of Public Works, Mr. Hung-mou Wu,
during winter vacation and we acquired lots of official data.
We were really appreciated those friendly people we met during the outing.
They were touched by our passion and willing to cooperate with us.
With help of these nice people, such as director of Public Works, eco-groups,
professionals and local people, we formed different point of views and
independent thinking ability.
Besides, we made appointments by telephone and even through e-mail.
In a word, we learned many useful methods on researching through the
experience attending the fair.
Mr.
Wen-chien Zheng, manager of Fengshan Literure and History Studio
was one of our counselors. He gave us a series of lectures, and
the whole time company and narration during field-investigation
as well.
Miss Yi-chen
Hsieh, the executive officer of Wetlands Taiwan Organization, spared her time
to give us a lesson teaching us about the hydrogeological
web of Kaohsiung City.
Director of
Wetlands Taiwan Organization, Mr. Yao-ting Su came to our school to evaluate
the possibility of constructing a wetland in school, and accepted
an interview.
4. What has been or will be the impact of your project on your community?
We have visited the basin of Caogong
Canal excavated by Cao Jin, and we admired the wisdom of our ancients.
But the current condition of the Caogong Canal is such a pity that most
of functions were lost, critically polluted, and even incorrect dredging
method. Fortunately, Kaohsiung city government took account of this
event, and started on many rebuilding projects, including the glory
in the Wetland Ecological Corridor. If the government of city and county
could cooperate on the rebuilding and dredging program, we believe the
beauty of the Caogong Canal can recover one day and transform into a
scenic spot.
5. How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers
and volunteers?

Canal to people showing the importance and value of the Canal.
6. Intellectual property rights of our website
The pictures we used in the website, except for
the process of the construction of Chouchai Wetland and jacanas, were
provided by Wetlands Taiwan and Mr. Ching-Chia Tseng. Other than some
of the pictures of current condition of the Caogong Canal were provided
by Miss Yi-Chen Hsieh and Mr. Wen-Chien Zheng, most of pictures, paintings,
plans and directions were collected by ourselves. In addition, the
scripts were all written by students and checked by teacher before presenting.
7. Discoveries, lessons, and surprises
(1) Discoveries¡G
Through the research project ¡§A Symphony of Water
and Green¡XTowards a Rebirth of Caogong Canal and a New Fragrant Waterfront
Kaohsiung,¡¨ we found the crisis of the headstream of the Caogong Canal,
saw the plan and construction on the Wetland Ecological Corridor. By
interviewing, we knew some details and possibilities of the rebirth
of the Caogong Canal. It was the best wish after all.
(2) Lessons¡G
The hundred-year ancient canal left by our ancestors
was destroyed by time and changes of the society. It is a pity that
some ponds were gone and polluted and the functions of irrigation disappear
little by little. We should protect these channels, or the almost two-hundred-year
Caogong Canal would disappear for sure.
(3) Surprises¡G
The ancient wisdom of the canal a hundred seventy
years ago is changing into a cultural and historical scenic spot. Kaohsiung
City Government has launched many construction projects on the downstream
of the Caogong Canal, which has showed the energy of a sunny city.
We believe that with the rebuilding of the headstream, we would have
many resources of tourism on fragrant river banks in the future.
We
deeply understood the current condition of the Caogong Canal in
outing.
Under Mr. Wen-Chien
Zheng¡¦s instruction, we knew issues about the Caogong Canal.
Though the
field-investigations were tiring, we learned a lot.
