Glockenspiel

GlockenspielGlockenspiel refer to instruments which are made by metal and with pitch. One could make sounds by striking the iron bars with different kinds of mallets. For instance, a strike of hard mallet makes clear and loud sound, and a strike of soft mallet makes a soft and continuing sound.

The glockenspiel (bell) is a kind of metallophone. It is a kind of percussion instrument with fixed pitch. By arranging the metal bars according to keyboards, makers of glockenspiels set the bars on the frame. Musicians play the glockenspiel by striking these metal bars and make different pitches. Glockenspiels could play the melody, just as the general musical instruments. Generally, glockenspiels are two and half to three in octaves, usually from F5 to C8. Some models could extend the high pitch to E8. It's a kind of transposing instrument, which notes the pitches two octaves lower than actual notes.

In the performance, the arrangement of glockenspiels are similar to other keyboards, which means that the bass is on the left and the treble is on the right. On a military band, however, glockenspiels are put vertically in front of the player's frame. Then, the keyboards are put differently to make the bass at the buttom and the treble at the top.
