“Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch is Nominated as one of the 25 Most Beautiful Libraries on Earth”

When Beitou Library is broadly reported by mass media on account of its nomination as “One of the 25 Most Beautiful Libraries on Earth”, which brought our notice and discussion, our group members started to collect lots of information of Beitou Libruary and Green Building . To our surprise, the advocate of Green Building in Taiwan has already into a certain level ; however, we didn’t know about this wat all. “Why does a library breathe?” one of our group members asked. After reading, we learned that Beitou Library has always been famous for being a Green Building. Then, we started to think that what if we start to do a survey about Green Building and Beitou Library, maybe we can let everyone know how this so-called Green Building library amazed the world. Furthermore, we can make people know more about Beitou Library so that people can learn the importance of Green Buildings and the benefits of them . This is the reason why we started the journey of our survey on Beitou Library and Green Building. Here is our plan:

1. Decide the Research Topic

In the beginning, we wanted to start from the cuisines and snacks around Beitou Library. However, our research is mainly about environment and ecosystem, we figured foods may not be a proper start. Besides, Beitou Library is the first library which is rated “diamond-level” as a Green Building library. We were pretty curious about what “diamond-level Green Building” is, and wondering what other levels are there in rating a Green Building. As a result, we decided to choose Beitou Library as the topic of our research. We feel like going on a treasure hunting journey and wish to know more about Beitou Library and its green miracle!

2. Collect Information

“Why is Beitou Library nominated as one of the 25 most beautiful libraries in the world?” After our research, the reason why it is so beautiful right now is a reconstruction in 2001. The old Beitou Library was determined as a fixer upper. And in the year of 2001, a project team for Green Building library was founded. They suggested that the new building should embrace the idea of Green Building such as sustainable, eco-friendly and so on while at the same time educate people about environmental protection. While we were reading the information we had gathered, we found an eye-catching flier, which provides chance to visit a demonstration base of Green Buildings. Therefore, we decided to take the chance before we visit Beitou library. We paid a visit to the demonstration base of Green Building, which was held by Architecture and Building Research Institute from Ministry of the Interior and Taiwan Green Building Council.

▲We had collected lots of information and newspaper about Green Building, and held a study group with our teacher.

3.Plan the Schedule

In order to know the meaning of Green B uilding, we read “Architecture O2” and watched “Our Island - Our Green Building” , a documentary made by Taiwan Public Television. Besides, when we applied for the visit to the demonstration base of Green Buildings, our teacher asked the project assistant of Taiwan Green Building Council if we could take a course about Green Building. The warm-hearted project assistant, Mr.Chen, provided our project to the Architecture and Building Research Institute   and Taiwan Green Building Council . To our greatest honor, both organizations praised our project and agreed to provide resources ! This is how we began our exploration on Green Building miracle.

4. Prepare for Visits

Now the schedule was set. We went online to look for the addresses, transportation routes and so on before we paid a visit. We also assigned different jobs for each of the group member. Some of our members were responsible for the interview, some had to contact Taiwan Green Building Council, while others took charge in photographing, recording and meeting minutes. We were definitely busy with our reading about “Architecture O2” and “Our Island- Our Green Building”. This was the moment that we learned that a tour is no way to be accomplished without cooperating with each other.

▲We use the Internet to find the address and search the traffic and some tools for our research.

Nine Indicators of Taiwan’s Green Building

Taiwan establishes its Green Building rating system (EEWH) for Taiwan’s Green Building after consulting the humid subtropical climate features in Taiwan, and the domestic building’s needs for the ecology, energy saving, waste reduction, and health. The Green Building rating system EEWH, second only to America’s LEED, is enacted in September, 1999. The original rating system comprises 7 indicators: “ greening ratio,” “soil water content,” “water resource,” “energy saving,” “CO2 emissions reduction,” “waste reduction,” and “sewage and garbage improvement.” Another two indicators, “biodiversity,” and “indoor environmental quality” were added in 2003, composing today’s so-called “Taiwan’s Green Building Evaluation and Indicators System.” (EEWH)

Besides, in order to enhance Taiwan’s Green Building level, to connect with the international Green Buildings, and to encourage private enterprises to be competitive in promoting the level of Green Building designs, “Green Building Grading System” is revised and enlarged into the system. The five grade levels of Green Building, according to the sequence from qualified rank to the best rank, are “Qualified,” “Bronze,” “Silver,” “Gold,” and “Diamond.” This grading system synchronizes with the global trends, and can effectively enhance the Green Building level. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Green Buildings can be redefined as ecological, energy-saving, waste-reducing and healthy.

The Green Building rating system EEWH refers to the first letters of 4 chief indicators: Ecology, Energy saving, Waste reduction and Health.

Ecology

Biodiversity indicators

One of the greatest things that Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch has done is to reserve the original ecology around the library. Here, habitats are everywhere; from the stream to the old trees, from the pond to a blade of grass. Different kinds of plants are grown here, attracting birds and butterflies. Through retaining the existing planting landscape and preserving the biodiversity, the habitats, Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch aims at presenting ecology and beauty to the world...

Energy Saving

Energy Saving by Controlling Air Conditioning

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch sets its air conditioning temperature at 28 Celsius degrees and make sure that the temperature doesn’t go higher than 30 Celsius or lower than 26 Celsius. The air conditioning will turned off after October. For the purpose of ensuring the indoor air quality, windows are extensively open so as to ventilate the library. The heat exchanger, which precools the fresh air before it flows into the air conditioner, is installed in the library. The device can reduce the indoor temperatures by at least 4 Celsius degrees and decrease the energy consumption of air conditioning. Thus, readers can have refreshing air...

Waste Reduction

Carbon Dioxide Reduction

The main body of Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch is mainly constructed by steel and high latitude woods, rather than reinforced concrete. 79.31% of the building applies the lightweight design to build the light partition wall. Part of the external walls were built by kiln-burnt granite recycled bricks. It’s a library with simple architectural model, while at the same time achieving the reduction of building energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions...

Health

Indoor Health and Environment indicators

In the library, every wood that can be seen or touched are painted with natural bore oil. No preservation treatment has been conducted. Therefore, unlike normal timber deck, these woods won’t produce formaldehyde that affects human health. All the woods remain natural and looks nice. In addition, they can not only adjust indoor humidity automatically, but also prevents from the erosion of sulfur gas. Decoration of indoor building materials: moderate decoration amount...

Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch Comfortable Designs

Bookshelf Height 110cm

The library intentionally uses the 110cm wooden cabinet as the bookshelf so as to create the excellent space permeability. Meanwhile, it hopes that such design will allow readers to appreciate the pleasant outdoor scenery at any time, and brings readers a step closer to the park’s natural environment.

Lovely sink

In order to make Children’s Reading Room more interesting, outside the Children’s Restroom, the designer designs a sink shaped like the writing brush and ink stone. It gives reader a different experience upon washing hands.

Indoor Reading Area

A variety of designed seats makes the indoor reading area more diverse and interesting. For example, the window seats with independent lighting permit the readers to read while appreciating the landscape in Beitou Park; the seats placed in the midst of bookcases make it convenient for the readers to take and read books while enjoy the feeling as if owing piles of books.

Outdoor Reading Area

The outdoor reading areas, which stretch from the first and second floor of the library, are extremely popular when the weather is cool and comfortable. It’s such an enjoyment to read by means of natural sunlight, while appreciating the natural landscape and embracing the breeze. The wide beveled wooden railing is the designer’s ingenuity. Readers can place their books on the wooden grid while leaning against the railing and enjoy reading and breathing in the nature beauty.

Staircase Reading Area with Tree-Shaped Steels

Staircase area that leads to Children’s Reading Room in the basement is designed with the concept of trees. Sunlight penetrates through the French windows. Children can therefore sit on the stairs, as if enjoying reading under the tree with sunshine glimmering. They can also pick up the seats at their wills, sitting or lying on it. Such design makes reading more interesting and relaxing.

Buoyancy-Driven Ventilation

The entire library applies outward-opening windows, one on the top and the other in the bottom, to produce buoyancy-driven ventilation. It not only saves energy, but also ushers in fresh air.

Wooden Desks and Chairs

Desks and chairs are all made of woods in Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch. It makes the library looks consistent in designing. In addition to that, the library meets the standard request of waste reduction since woods can be recycled and reused. What’s more, there are various insect-figure designs on the back of the chairs, which makes the library looks lively.

Termite Control

It is known that what wooden buildings or furniture fear the most is termite. However, in order to meet the requirements of Indoor Health and Environmental indicators, even though Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch is overall constructed with woods.the woods are not smeared with any other paints except the bore oil. Hence, it employs the methods of applying drugs inside the corner of the woods to prevent termite from harming the woods. (Reference: Li Wen-Ling, from Beitou Branch)

Not after I visited the Beitou Library did I know that there is such a long history and culture in Betou Library. I think that the most special about Beitou Library is its rounded garden. Though there is only a kind plant called “Bidens pilosa L. var. radiata Sch. Bip” is growing, besides that there is photovoltaics panel for saving electricity power, and the design of the roof is quite special. I can see that how many efforts the designer had paid! Because the gradient of the roof, it makes it easier to collect the rain. What’s more cool is that the eaves is built extremely sharp in order to prevent the window being wet after rain.
In addition, the biggest reason why I love Beitou library is that it is close to nature. There’s not a single tree chopped while it was being built. After we listened the introduction from the director of the library, we started questionnaire survey in front of the gate of the library. There was one big brother asked me about the age, and after he know that I am only in the 5th grade , he was so surprised! He even said it is not common that a 5th grade student know much about the green house! I am really glad to have this chance to visit the Beitou library, I’m looking forward to going there again!

On October 14th, I visited a green house library called “Beitou Library”. It is a green house which is rated as diamond-level. This building is built with steel bar and woods from Canada whose latitude is pretty high. And it contains less of reinforced concrete. It also make good use of solar energy to save the electricity bill and simultaneously reduce the release of . The gradient of the roof makes it easy to collect rain , which can be use to wash the toilet. This is a good example of environment protection. The desks in Beitou Library are only 110 centermeter high, which makes it look more spacious and makes the air easy to convect.
I’m totally in love with Beitou Library after this visit. It is because it really make it to accomplish the goal of “Environment, Energy saving, Reduce of pollution, and heathy”, and provides a great environment for human being , animals and plants. Besides, the most memorable thing to me is the way they collect the rain, if I can do it in my home, I believe it can save lots of the bills for water usage and recycle the water.

I only used to know the beautiful outside of the Beitou Library, but after the detailed introduction gave by the director of the library and a taste of this diamond-level green house, I feel more connected with it right now. I walk around the library ,I found it similar to Noah’s ark. The moment I stepped inside the library, I felt delightful because the great day lighting inside. Borrowing light from the nature not only saves energy but also makes people feel more comfortable. The architect’s design allows us to have a view just like we are reading in a park with lots of trees. It is such a extravagance for us who live in a city! I felt touched when I went on to the eco-roof and see how it make use of the solar energy and how to collect the rain effectively. If I can study in this such nice environment everyday. I believe I can have better sight and joyful learning. I wish someday every school could all be green house.

This mornig , me and my classmates paid a visit to the first green house that is rate as diamond-level in Taiwan—Beitou Library. Fisrt of all, I took the MRT to the New Beitou Station and met with other friends, and then we walk into the Beitou next to the MRT station. I’ve heard that next year is the 100 birthday of this park ,how old and historical this is! When we were in the park, the first thing occurred to us is the pythoncidere made from the trees, and the special designed walk trail, and a playground for children. It was just like we were in a real forest. After 2 minutes walk, the ecosystem pond full of sulfur smell was right on our right side, and after many trails the most famous Beitou River is right under us. We acrossed the bridge to the other side, there are the Museum of Beitou Hot Spring and the main character –Beitou Library.
The director of the library Mr. Chou led us to the gallery which is on the first basement floor next to children’s reading room ,we saw a video called “After Class” which gave us a detailed introduction of Beitou Library. Afterwards, we visited the library together. Mr. Chou led us from inside to outside the library and gave us introduction. For example, he mentioned how the library was built in the respect of the local environment, all the building materials are recycleable, and how the 110 cm desk made the library more spacious and how them make good use of the nature light. We are surpreised that this library has lots of secrets than we can imagine!
In the end, the most exciting moment finally came, as the first 6 students who went onto the roof of the Beitou Library in our school, we could finally find out what it was like on the roof. Mr. Chous first introduced the covered soil’s fuction- block the heat and provides homes to some insects, and secondly he let us learned more about how the roof collect the rain and how the solar energy worked, and how the dirt of birds affected the panel of solar energy. When the lesson ended, we started questionnaire survey. Though started with shyness , but not after when I took the first step to ask others to help with my survey. When I first got agree from a person , I felt happy and started to felt more brave to go on. I was so glad, this was one lesson that I’ve never taken in school, a very rare experience.
The fame of Beitou Library is not fake at all. It not only has the place for animal protection which is amazing but it make a cozy environment for everyone. It’s just like a green diamond in a forest, I’m definitely coming again.

On October 14th, our group paid a visit to Beitou Library which is rated as diamond-level green house. The time we went into the park, the cool breeze made me feel relaxed. Just when I was wondering where the library is,I glimpsed a boat made of wood between the huge trees there. And it turned out to be the library we were looking for.
The Beitou Library is mostly made of wood. What made more impressed is that the wood smell and cool atmosphere inside the library instead of the old images of other libraries, plain white and not as alive as Beitou Library. In addition, The roof of Beitou Library is also very special, I never reach the panel of solar energy so close. I saw some dirts on the panel which did harm to the make of energy. We also saw some squirrel dirts on the corner, which is called “the Treasure of Beitou Library”. I’ve experienced a lot about the ecosystem protection and multiple types of animals.
When we were on the process of questionnaire survey, my mother and I were so lucky to meet a father and daughter from Honkong and a couple of friends from the USA, who were very friendly to help me out with the queostionaire. Once we met 6 student at a time, and they all agreed to help me, which made us very thrilled. This is my first time to take part in the questionnaire survey, I was very nervous about it, but not after meeting some friendly people. It turned very interesting to me.
Thanks for my teacher and the director of the library who led us to the visit, what I’ve experienced is way more interesting than book, I really hope that I have the chance to come around soon.

Today morning ,my parents and I go to Beitou in a relaxed mood. We pay a visit to the first green house that is rated as diamond-level in Taiwan—Beitou Library. It is located in the Beitou Park, where surrounds lots of tall trees. It is a good place for people to relax. If tired of reading, you can find out there are some squirrels and birds hopping and singing in the woods.
The green roof of Beitou Library is the mostr attractive place for me, it provides a green land for butterflies ,dragonflies and grasshoppers. The rich nature ecosystem is not the only thing that green roof has, it can also contain water and collect rain for usage.Old trees provide squirrels and birds places to live, clean the air, make the environment more clean and places for people to play chat and avoid the heat.
So we really need to think about it when decide to chop the trees or save them.
