During one of my field trips, I had the opportunity to know the history of Beitou Branch of Taipei Public Library. To my surprise, it was a fixer upper then. However, the architect used his imagination and passion to turn it into a library which was built based on the concept of “Green Building”. The whole building uses environmentally friendly material, and it wisely makes use of the natural light; furthermore, it is well-ventilated, which makes it an energy-saving building. For us, this “magic tree house in the forest” arouses our dream and fantasy.

Needless to say, there are hundreds and thousands of buildings in the city. If we can introduce the environmentally friendly concept to build sustainable Green Buildings , we can protect the nature and get much closer to it. Imagine if each building is like a small forest, and we can work, live and learn in such environment, how pleasant would it be? We hope that through our exploration, we can make Green Buildings well known to the society so that people can understand and appreciate the advantages of the ecofriendly architecture.

Methodology

  1. Literature Review – We, Green Miracle, collected related books and websites in order to understand everything about Beitou Library, including its history, present status, activities it promotes and so forth.
  2. Questionaire - We designed the questionnaire, which focused on the perspectives of the subjects for Beitou Library. Our subjects include readers, visitors and shop owners.
  3. Interview - We designed some questions, which were based on the concept of Beitou Library’s Green Building, its words after winning prizes, and the possible policy about green architectures and so on. The interviewees include the Minister from the Ministry of the Interior, the director of National Central Library, architects, and many other related people and institutes.
  4. Field Study - We visited Beitou Library, Architecture and Building Research Institute from Ministry of the Interior and the demonstration base of Green Buildings.

Postscript

To come up with a theme to conduct the research is like brainstorming, which takes a lot of time. At the beginning, we discussed for the several possible topics. During the process of discussion, we constantly talked about our viewpoints, opinions, and doubts about each topic. Luckily, there was an interesting topic on newspaper which caught our eyes a lot—“The first library which is green Building people can not only study books but also study nature.” Plus, there was another piece of news, “Beitou Library was the top 25th beautiful libraries in the world.” These two pieces of news reminded us that the earth was sick now. Not only the earth, Taiwan was under the threat of global warming; therefore, to decrease the CO2 footprints and to live ecofriendly had become the priority for all human beings. After the vote, we determined to take honor, responsibility, and green building as our research structure. In addition, we set the theme as, “The magic tree house in the forest—Beitou green library.” We sincerely hope that through the following ways, such as visiting, lecturing, questionnaire, and activity promoting to remind people to put emphasis on the issue on ecological environment.
