Victoria Cycling

The Story of Victoria Cycling in Douliu

Victoria Academy Bilingual Middle & Elementary School is quite a long name. The teachers and students there often shorten the name as “Victo” or “Victoria”. The transportation in Douliu area is not convenient so people often drive cars, ride motorbikes or bike instead of walking. In order to develop the students’ healthy bodies and physical strength, with the exception of running and swimming, several coaches are usually invited to give professional cycling training lessons in summer.

Victoria Academy promotes the popularization of riding bikes and also emphasizes the importance of physical warm-ups before riding, enabling riders to be nimble and agile in action and avoiding injuries at the same time. Therefore, Victoria students initially give it a trial on campus and make sure the bike is functioning properly before setting out. Naturally, the coaches and teachers will follow as protection measures.。

Several high streets and back lanes in Douliu are quite suitable for cyclists to ride through. There are also a couple of famed restaurants along the streets, which makes the journey more interesting. However, it is a pity that there is no places with public facilities for bike parking. Thus, we could only stop at some spots and then walked to finished our research interviews and filming, hoping this study will appeal to the government and local attention and take further steps to work on a public bike parking service system.

“The Story of Victoria Cycling in Douliu” has taken some samples of city bike systems as references. Among those examples, Taipei and ChangHua are the most successful and remarkable cities, adopting Easycards as the check-out ID. This has attracted lots of tourists due to their ease of use. There have been more than 40 million Easycard users so far. Never-the-less, the maintenance fee of iBike is pretty high and Taipei City has cancelled the free charge policy. In Yunlin County, local police stations are uniting schools and requesting support and assistance from enterprises, such as the Formosa Petrochemical Corporation, to improve the transportation in Douliu and boost its development of sightseeing tourism.
