On the occasion of 100 founding anniversary of ROC, rural areas in Taiwan have totally changed from traditional countryside to an energetic style with multiple values. Backing up by solid agricultural production technology and advanced technology of breeding and planting, Taiwan sees its flower industry competition gaining favor, which makes the products of the flower industry quite potential and globally competitive. (Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, 2010) To forge Taiwan’s flower industry into a globally-known horticultural industry, to take roots in the global flower market, and to make Formosa become the world’s leading high-quality agriculture pioneer shining on the international market, the authorities concerned should actively strengthen the intellectual property rights to protect the newly developed varieties and species, promoting MIT flowers or flowers from Formosa. (FFF) By doing so, because of the increase in consumer demand for domestic and foreign markets, florists in Taiwan will expand their flowers planting areas, making Taiwanese flowers blossom all year long and building Taiwan into an island of flowers. (Peng, Tzou-kuei, 2010)

Varieties of Flowers in Taiwan

　　According to the classification of Agricultural Statistics Yearbook, flower products can be further classified into six types: cut flowers, orchids, bulbous class flowers, seed class flowers, nursery class flowers, and pot flowers. Cut flowers are fresh flowers, flower arrangement materials cutting from flower plants. For example, flowers bought from flower shops and can be immediately arranged in the vase, such as roses, chrysanthemums, gladiolus, lilies, carnations, bird of paradise flowers, phalaenopsis, gerberas, anthuriums, and lisianthus. (Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, 2011). Pot flowers are flowers planted in the pots as indoor ornamental plants, like phalaenopsis, poinsettias, and ZZ plants. Bulbous plants are underground roots of the plants, like daffodils and hyacinths. Nursery class flowers are those outdoor landscape plants planted in the ground soil, which are the species used for gardening, landscaping, and green engineering applications, like Taiwan short-leaf pine. Flowers belonging to seed class are seeds of all kinds of grass and flowers, such as African violets and gloxinias.

Production and Distribution of Flowers in Tawian

　　Cut flowers are the main flower type in international flower business, so the Green Flower Marketing Cooperative’s anthuriums are mainly cut flowers, complemented by pot flowers. Our project team compiled the production and distribution of cut flowers and pot flowers island-wide, presenting in the following tabular form 3-1.
