This is the fourth year that we joined Cyberfair. The whole
course throughout our studies uses the school¡¦s fundamental
curriculum as the main theme. All class and activity
planning is prepared when the term begins. Strong supports
from the school¡¦s administration have helped us in
delivering productive interviews outside the school. Other
social resources that were brought into our group also
helped us to grow and flourish. Joining with the students in
studying and researching the class theme has made me proud,
especially on the operation of digital instruments, such as:
digital camcorder, digital camera, pen recorder, and etc. In
the past the students can only get to use them in their
studies in school, but not in places that are outside of the
school or in their home. Under the teachers¡¦ earnest and
tireless guidance, the students have fulfilled their roles
in building up their knowledge by the understanding,
operation, application, and organization of the digitalized
information. With practical hands-on experiences they also
demonstrated to the world their tireless devotions and
efforts. Facial tattoo culture is used as the main subject
of our studies, and it is hoped through this experience that
we can bring and engrave this unique Truku culture to
everyone¡¦s heart.

The topic for our studies this time is "Facial Tattoo¡¨.
Although we could not actually interview facial tattooed
seniors, we have combined many other curriculums in the
research in this semester. These curriculums covered
activities from conducting on-line researches in regard to
facial tattoos, hands-on experiences in Arts and Humanities
class, to the efforts of travelling across half of Hualien
County to conducting interviews with historians and cultural
workers. All these experiences throughout the process have
helped me in learning more from the experiences of teaching.
Through this discovery experience I hope I can learn and
grow together with these students, and at the same time
allow the marking of ¡§facial tattoo¡¨ that is an honor to all
Truku to engrave on our heart forever.

This is our fourth Cyberfair. Research subject is also
related to Truku culture. Although this is in different
category, I consider Cyberfair project is a learning process
which helps me to realize my tribal culture. In addition to
learn new things, Cyberfair project also changes students¡¦
opinion towards their own culture.
I personally feel that Cyberfair project brings me a sense
of achievement; although the entire process takes a lot of
work, I have had previous wonderful experiences to learn
from. For example, the interview with Mr. Pidelo Wukah let
us realize the couple¡¦s persistence and particular interest
towards Truku traditional music. Thus, we start to
understand ancestor¡¦s wisdom and lifestyle actually affect
us. The interview with Ms. Ching-hsiang Hu sheds light
regarding the process of music collection. Without recording
pen and video camera, the first-hand information is from
household visits and hand-written manuscript. Throughout
this journey, what is her belief and what does she want to
accomplish?
Many difficulties encountered are resolved eventually; in
this project, we have learned many things about Truku facial
tattoo. I think everyone in Sinbaiyang gets along very well
and supports each other. Moreover, students have learned
their own cultural knowledge because of this Cyberfair
project. As long as you come here, you will leave your
footprints in the memory of Sinbaiyang Club students and
faculty.

Unprecedented
¡§Tattoo (Wen)¡¨ Eight "Face (Mian)¡¨ Power
For Truku, ¡§facial tattoo¡¨ means grow-up, a recognition, an
heritage and, moreover, a responsibility. ¡§Facial tattoo¡¨
proves that you are a real Truku. Tribal people have many
rules regarding ¡§facial tattoo¡¨. Four tools for ¡§Lines (Wen)¡¨
(small hammer, needle, charcoal smoke, bamboo comb feather)
can only be handled by qualified persons. You have to have
deep understanding of ¡§facial tattoo¡¨ in order to become a
real Truku. This is the main purpose of this project. Many
visits to the elderly people with students for a field study
are valuable experience in terms of research study. Only
personal visit and interview can collect information in
order to understand ¡§facial tattoo¡¨ in depth.
If you get the unprecedented ¡§tattoo¡¨, you will become an
eight ¡§face¡¨ power Truku.

For a part-time teacher who is not from e-generation, I join
this team without confidence. I am grateful that many
research discussion and preparation are supported by the
other teachers in the team while I did not spend too much
time and energy in it. Jian Qing has superior teaching
quality and the other schools may learn a lot from it.
Students learn to become confident little reporters who can
design questions, operate instrument, recording, editing the
information about their tribal culture. After every
interview, you can feel their changes and improvement.
Nine Truku kids already feel the cultures from their
ancestors are valuable. Although they were not born in a
time of facial tattoo, those who are interviewed have taught
them how to become an important figure in the history. We
hope every one of them, when they grow up, will continue
their support to Truku culture.

Preparing the class for ¡§facial tattoo¡¨ has again allowed me
to observe the culture of Truku from a different
perspective. When I saw the pictures of facial tattooed
seniors in the past, my instinct told me that: it hurts. Why
would the people of this tribe be willing to leave marks on
their faces? What gave them the courage? It is with this
curiosity that I found the answer: the facial tattoo is the
symbol of a tribe, recognition by the people of the tribe,
and a trial to a person's abilities and talents. The facial
tattoo symbolizes that the person has possessed
independence, peerless courage, and the willpower to survive
in adverse circumstances. Throughout the course I also saw
the efforts students devoted in learning their own culture
and became proud of being a Truku.
Culture will eventually disappear and be gone with time.
However, I witnessed a group of children putting lots of
efforts in learning their own culture. Even though nowadays
the norm of practicing facial tattoo and the strict ordeal
of ancient spirits has no longer existed, but that strong
willpower of the people of Truku can still be seen in this
group of Truku kids.

When we start to select the software, we are not sure
whether students are able to use Overture. During the
teaching process, everyone participates in the discussion
and searches for suitable task from the list. Thus, everyone
learns the basics of the software in one lesson. When
professor outputs midi file, they then realize that they are
able to create an electronic music file. Because of the
desire of learning, they think a staff is better than
internet games when I tell them to type the ancient tunes
Ms. Hu collected into electronic files. This year, music
class for the seniors has this curriculum. I believe our
traditional xylophone music creation absolutely will be much
better than before.
