To the people of Truku, Seediq, and Atayal, ˇ§facial tattooˇ¨
is the representation of divinity and glory. In the
traditions, only those who are with facial tattoos are
considered ˇ§real humansˇ¨, and can receive appropriate
respects and statuses from others and the society.
For mountainous tribes of Taiwan, facial tattoos are symbols
for the tribe, status, and honor. However, with the
prohibition and suppression during the Japanese occupation,
and the changes in our social system and the environment,
facial tattoos have faded. The elders with facial tattoos
have gradually passed away. This project is to present the
art of facial tattoo in the Truku tribes. Through heritage,
respect, education, and reflection, we hope that more people
could learn about the meaning of facial tattoos.
This special report introduces the art of facial tattoo in
Truku custom. A complete introduction is presented through
words and images to unveil the Truku art of facial tattoo.
With the sharing contributed by facial tattoo historians and
writers, music and dances that are associated with facial
tattoos are brought to the audience. Joined with artistic
creations and activities, it is in the best interest of
Truku to continue and pass on the glorious and divine spirit
embraced in the Truku tradition of facial tattoo.
By virtue of visiting, exploring and experiencing, research
team of Jien Ching Elementary School combines school and
community resources to make public the Truku tradition of
facial tattoo. It also educates the public to respect and to
empathize the culture.
