On January
14, 2004, the government recognized Truku as a tribe. With customs and culture
similar to Tayal Tribe, they live in high mountains, live on hunting and water
culture, and regard rainbows as gods. However, they cannot communicate with
each other in their native languages. Although they live in the same neighborhood,
they hardy keep in touch with each other.

According
to the legend, the Truku tribe originated from the huge stone pillar in the
middle of Pai-shi Hill, Central Mountains. Later, it migrated to the He-cho
Village, Jen-ai County. The tribe’s people called it as Truku Truwan. As the
population increased, it was separated into three clans: Truku, Deuda, and
Dkdaya.
About
three to four hundred years ago, as the population increased, there was not
enough arable land and game fields. Then, the people began to climb over the
Central Mountain and moved to Li-wu River, Mu-kua River, and Tao-sai River in
east Taiwan. They called themselves Truku. Therefore, the place where they
migrated to was called the “Truku” area. It is how the name Truku came into
being. The area where Truku people lived covered the above places and what is
National Truku Park now.
In
1914, Japan launched the biggest battle in 20th Century Taiwan – the
“Truku-Japanese War.” The so-called “Truku Expedition” as named by Japan. The
Japanese government mobilized 22,749 soldiers with advanced weapons to attack
us from both sides: Nantou and east west Hualien. Meanwhile, Truku had only
2500 warriors. As there was a drastic difference in the number of soldiers and
weapons, the tribe’s people were almost annihilated.TOP
