Interview with Zhoulan Raoping Hakka Writer & Reciter---Ms. Peifeng Zhan
The Junior Corps went to a hair salon in Zhuolan Laozhuang on November 23, where the Hakka language teacher Ms. Peifeng Zhan welcomed them while doing haircut for her customer. When there was a break, Ms. Zhan would tell them in Raoping Hakka how she helped Mrs. Qiu make Changhua Zhuolan Hakka phonetic symbol materials. Ms. Zhan was the chairperson of Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Association, whose main responsibility was build Raoping Lane as the Association’s promotion base. Ms. Zhan promoted local Raoping culture through several cultural key areas, and one could see two poems painted on the walls of Raoping Lane. These two poems were from Ms. Zhan, which covered all the characteristics of Laozhuang and easy to read.

Ms. Zhan said she and the chairperson Qianqing Zhan were all touched by Mrs. Qiu’s determination to revive Changhua Raoping Hakka, so they worked closely with her. Since June 2015, Mrs. Qiu would send her Phonetic Teaching Materials for Changhua Zhuolan Raoping Hakka to Ms. Zhan via courier, and Ms. Zhan would correct the phonetic symbols and words one by one, and then send back to Yuanlin. Later, she would give a call between 10 pm to 11 pm and discuss about the phonetic problems word by word, sentence by sentence. In July and August, she would go to Jing Siou Elementary School around 7 o’clock every Wednesday morning to teach families Raoping Hakka, and then go to record for audio textbooks from 1 to 3:30 in the afternoon. Also, she would bring back the newly edited phonetic book after the recording. From September to now, Mrs. Qiu is still writing amazing teaching materials; she has written 8 volumes and more than 300 units with audio materials, which cover words, short sentences, short passages, speeches, scripts, ballads, poems, word solitaire games, terms, everyday vocabulary, riddles and phonetic symbol collections for common words.... Ms. Zhan uses Line (Raoping Hakka Group) and Facebook (Raoping Hakka Group) to discuss phonetics everyday. She likes Mrs. Qiu’s shares of more than 100 Changhua Zhuolan Raoping Hakka teaching videos on Youtube. She said every time she watched the videos when working in other cities, she would feel sweet while listening to the familiar language. Ms. Zhan, the Zhuolan Hakka master, taught parents and children Raoping Hakka for the Zhan family every Wednesday night; also, she taught kids in Zhuolan Elementary School too. Beginning from June, she has been using Changhua Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Teaching Material, which was edited by Mrs. Qiu, reviewed by her and supported by Qianqing Zhan. This teaching material has won positive applause from the students, which leveled up their learning results. Ms. Zhan spoke out loudly in Raoping Hakka, “Mrs. Qiu you are awesome! You are great!” We have seen from Mrs. Qiu making something out of nothing, which proves the old saying, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Mrs. Qiu’s impressive work on reviving Raoping Hakka language is truly something, and she is a good example of Taiwan Raoping Hakka. Changhua, Zhuolan, and Raoping are all very close, and Mrs. Qiu is the best help. Thanks to her dedication to the revival of Raoping Hakka, there are more and more people recognize this language.
