Read Meidu Qiu’s Changhua Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Teaching Materials
The Junior Corp likes Meidu Qiu’s teaching materials and thinks them true to the life. Mrs. Qiu did not only mark the phonetic symbols of Changhua Zhuolan Hakka accent and Hsinchu Hakka accent, she also invented Hakka Phonetic Symbols of Qiu by referring to Standard Phonetic Symbols Marking drafted by Hakka Affair Council. That way, speaking Hakka becomes easy. To take a glimpse of the secrets behind Mrs. Qiu’s compiling teaching material tips, the Junior Corp came to her history studio in Yuanlin.

20 literature and history works, Raoping Hakka reports in Central Taiwan Hakka Monthly, 8 Changhua Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Teaching Materials and more than 30 Standard Pronunciations of Hakka by Mrs. Qiu covered up three big tables. On the cabinets that held literature and history books and information on Hakka, there were a procession of pictures and videos. The Corp is amazed by what they saw. It looked just like a small-scale library.

Mrs. Qiu felt it a pity not to have local materials during the past ten years when she was teaching Taiwanese at school. In 2012 when she learnt Raoping Hakka on her own, she felt it complex and difficult to read it using the materials mainly focusing on Hsinchu accent. In 2013 after she got the certification of Hakka Master, she opened school clubs and parent-child classes. At first, the teaching materials she chose lacked Zhuolan accent phonetic symbols. She asked herself, “what is a workman without his tools?”. And then, when there is barely any Changhua Raoping Hakka teaching material, she decided to make them on her own and gave revival of Changhua Raoping a boost.

And then in 2015 when Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Association came to visit Yongjing, she told Zhuolan Hakka Master Zhan Pei Fen and the Director of Zhuolan Raoping Hakka Association about her idea of compiling teaching materials. Beyond her expectation, they said they would lend her a hand in it and were willing to come and teach in Yuanlin. Therefore, started from June, 2015, every day after work, Mrs. Qiu sat in front of a computer in the living room compiling materials. She discussed about Zhoulan Raoping’s traditional word usage and phonology and words and phrases that are close to the life in Changhua Raoping on phone with Mrs. Zhan. During summer break, they recorded Changhua Zhuolan Hakka CD, one sentence in Hakka and one in Mandarin Chinese. Mrs. Qiu’s students responded to it positively, saying that it helps them with learning when they are at home. Their materials make a conspicuous elevation on teaching quality and outcome.

From June to December, 2015, in a short period of seven months, Mrs. Qiu compiled audio teaching material with 217 lessons and 365 pages. She is very efficient.
