Elements of the Project

1.How the Project Meets Cyberfair Objectives:

Kaohsiung Niaosong Wetland Park has been existed in Kaohsiung for more than 20 years. We hope to make the general public understand more about the Park through our ecological tour guiding website. We interview related personnel, pay field trips to the Park, photograph and record, dispatch the questionnaires, and carry out the surveys. By so doing, we have a better understanding on how Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society runs the Park and carries out various educational activities through their professional volunteers. We also understand more about the ecological surroundings and natural resources of the Park. Owing to the popularity of the modern cyber-technology, we also connect ecological tour guiding website of the Park to QR-Code and voice navigation functions, making the public understand more about Niaosong Wetland Society.

2.Students’ Roles as “Ambassadors”:

In the process of doing the project, our team perceives the importance of understanding ecological environments. Everyone has to do his or her share to improve the surroundings. Thus, we apply skills and knowledge we learn in class to the fabrication of the project and ecological tour guiding website, which is connecting to QR-Code and voice navigation functions, giving the public a chance to understand more about Niaosong Wetland Park. Since wetlands are an important factor of a city, hopefully, when the general public surf our tour guiding website, they will know that Kaohsiung is really an ecologically abundant city, not only having heavy industries. During the process, we become the Park’s volunteers. In addition to fabricate the website, recording voice commentaries, laying out QR-Code signs, and partaking in all kinds of promotional activities, we also interview and instruct the visitors to the Park how to save and retrieve ecological tour guiding website by using QR-Code function through the Park’s QR-Code explanatory signs.

3.Required Coursework and Curriculum:

We are a team composed of three grades of Department of Information Processing of Kaohsiung commercial High School. Courses offered by the three grades, such as information processing, multimedia production, web production, and project production, are closely related to PBL learning, to our advantage of doing the Cyberfair project. We are so lucky that we can apply what we learn to the project, realizing and fully utilizing the classroom knowledge.

4.Intellectual Property Rights:

Because one of our instructors is a volunteer of both Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society and Niaosong Wetland Park, we closely cooperate with them. A few paragraphs and pictures are authorized by these two organizations. The data are partly given to us by the Wild Bird Society, while the others are self-edited collected information and interview scenarios. As for transcripts on ecology, we consult the book “Niaosong Wetland Park in Kaohsiung” heavily. Commentary volunteers help us a lot in producing recording lectures. The recording of voice tour is all the team members’ doing, which will not appear in the Cyberfair project because of the space limit.

5.Findings and Lessons Learned:

  1. The ecological tour guiding website produced by the Cyberfair Team gets positive response from school teaching staff and volunteers from both Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society and Niaosong Wetland Park. They all favorably think that the color arrangement and configuration of the project’s layout are so unique that they closely match the theme of a website featuring ecology. Since the website structure is clear and concise, users can easily learn how to log on to it, so is the case with QR-Code operation.
  2. Saving and retrieving ecological species tour guiding functions through QR-Code is both convenient and practical. And the web pages will be full of varieties and users can gain more knowledge on species if audio touring and video linking functions are added.(Voice Touring Function: http://www.kwbs.org.tw/wetland/)
  3. File names should be in English and avoid whitespace. Otherwise, QR-Code cannot function well in correctly reading the websites and sitelinks are troublesome.
  4. In doing the project, we find that downloading and installing QR-Code scanning App through market-sold mobile devices will link the scanning outcome to the corresponding website. If whitespace exists in the website, QR-Code decoder cannot connect to the desired website, resulting in the remaking of the QR-Code barcodes, so is the ncase with whitespace in the file names.
  5. In the process of combining and producing barcode explanatory signs, we should carefully compare QR-Code barcodes to species names to see whether they match. Misplacement occurred before and we had to restart all over.
  6. In fabricating websites, we should cooperate with professional team or professionals, so that we can have through and favorable discussions and when encountered with problems, we can work together to work out the best solutions. This time we cooperate with Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society, which is a professional team in ecology.
  7. QR-Code mobile barcodes should be maintained with integrity and in adequate size. If violated, they can not be scanned correctly. We once carelessly mispunched several barcodes, resulting in QR-Code malfunction.

6.Information Tools and Technology:

(1)Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Ulead PhotoImpact X3: To edit pictures website images.

(2)Adobe Dreamweaver CS6: To manufacture and typeset web pages.

(3)Adobe Flash Professional CS6: To produce animation for the web pages.

(4)svrecorder10be: To make voice files of plants, insects, and birds.

(5)Audacity: To cut and reorganize voice files.

(6)Microsoft Word 2010: To record all the Cyberfair project materials.

(7)Microsoft Excel 2010: To collect and organize questionnaire data and compose pie charts.

(8)Line: This is the most-often used massaging App by the Cyberfair team members. From the beginning to the completion of the Cyberfair project, we highly depend on it as a communication platform, day and night.

(9)MAC i-Pad mini: This tablet is used to take pictures.

(10)Cell phones: To contact with team members and take pictures during the making of the Cyberfair project.

(11) USB Flash Drive: To save all the files of the Cyberfair project.
