Storytelling- Boys and Girls are Equal

Yu-Tsai Bookworm’s reading promotion activity was finally here! Unlike previous personal reading experiences, we were going to use a lively fun way to make the students fall in love with reading again! And plant the seeds that will lead to a lifelong love of reading in each student.

Activity Process

Preparation
Ten minutes before the end of class, everyone went to the music classroom to decorate. Some people hung up mindmaps, others tested the computer equipment, and the rest prepared the blackboard pictures. Ding-a-ling-a-ling! Class was finished! As soon as the bell rang, the students who were coming to listen raced to line up outside. At this time, those of us on the door giving out cards were so busy!

Gender Equality Game
Before the story began, we used some picture cards to play a game. Partly to see if they knew which pictures belonged to boys and which belonged to girls, but also to help them prepare for the next step.

Storytelling Time
After a brief introduction, we began to tell the first story. Everyone followed along with the storyteller, all of the kids really got involved in watching the animation and listening. After the story, they seemed to have new ideas inside their heads!

Watching the Video
After watching the video about gender equality, the young students found it hilarious. We hope they also have a better understanding of the issues too!

Sharing Time
After watching the video, the host asked the students to share what they felt about the video. Then they began to discuss the issue of gender equality. After the video, we again showed the students the picture cards and asked “Can boys play with dolls?” “Can girls race cars?” After the activities, the students began to have different answers to these questions.

Storytelling Time
As soon as the presentation began, everyone started to laugh! Because in the second story a lot of the characters are teachers and students from our school, the students could easily get into the story and understand.

Sharing Time
Apart from introducing the book and the concept of self-identity, the host also talked about the “ME” mindmap. Each of the Cyberfair students took turns to explain the mindmap to the younger students.

Worksheet Explanation
Towards the end of the activity, the host gave out a worksheet called “ME”. From this worksheet we hoped to discover how much the students got out of the activity.

A Wonderful Activity!
The wonderful reading promotion activity went very smoothly. Everyone happily left the classroom and it was a resounding success. Many of the students asked for us to continue with the storytelling activities! We would also like to do so, maybe every year we can do something like this!

Mind Mapping

After reading something interesting, we hope the students will gain something. We did a concept map with the students to see what they learned about self-identity. We each drew a large “I” onto a big piece of paper and hung it up for everyone to see.

Results from the Student Worksheet

After the activity, lost of students took home the worksheet and discussed it with their parents. We planned to use the results as a display at our next activity.

Bookworm Says:
At each of the storytelling activities, we were fully prepared and researched. This really helped us to give the right impression and hold the attention of the students involved.
The Bookworms would like to tell everyone that animations are great aids when teaching stories! Try it!

These activity really impressed me. It was the first time I read a book to so many people, and my first time to spread the love of reading, and the first time to teach the lower grades about reading. So many new experience were in this activity. Why does time go so fast? I was so reluctant to do these activity, but I gradually learnt to love lower grades, and loved reading to threw and with them in these activity. The things that we did helped lower grades to learn new things. I hope that we can continue to do these activity!

I discovered that planning activities is not easy, because we have to think of every detail from the beginning of the activity to the end. You need to have a lot of intelligence and foresight. This truly taught me a lot! I still remember when I told a story the first time, I was super nervous. However, after some practice, I did not let my nervousness stop me anymore; I finished my story very easily. During the event, it was seeing the little children smile and clap their hands that gave me more and more strength to work on this event in popularizing reading.
