Sappho Says:
I chose in the best and worst of times to open a bookshop. The most important thing was:
Please help the Small Small Bookshop. Let the seed of reading continue to grow.
When you pick up a book, it doesn’t matter where you bought it, as far as possible you should share what you’ve read and your feelings. Please continue to dream.
From our interviews with Sappho we saw that from a young age, she had a passion for reading and we also saw the activities Small Small held to promote reading.
Why is promoting reading so important to Sappho?
Our teacher asked us to think about reading again and so we held a debate called “Do we need to read?” Afterwards we regained our enthusiasm and original intention for reading.
The Debate
Date:11/10/2012
Location:Yu-Tsai Elementary School – Art and Craft Classroom
Attendees:Angela, Eva, Lucy, Sabrina, Joanna, Belle, Andrew, Ray and Eddy
Thinking and Reading
- The cyberfair team members divided into two teams with opposite points of view.
- Before the debate, all of the relevant materials were collected and sorted.
- The teams then prepared their thoughts and ideas.
Activity
Developing Battle Plans
Let the debate begin! After the two sides had taken turns to make statements, they paid close attention to the last time. On one hand they carefully prepared their materials and on the other hand they discussed their battle plans. Everyone talked intensely about how they would face their opponents. |
The Rules of the Debate Explained Before the debate, the teacher explained the rules once more. Typically it’s always noisy, but this time it was quiet as if we were readying ourselves for the battle. Everyone was silent. After hearing the explanation, there was a one minute countdown and the debate began! |
The Debate
The class was filled with the thick smell of gunpowder. Each student went to the stage and confidently read out their statements. The students below the stage listened to point with concentration. The opposing team looked for problems in the other side’s argument and was ready to ask questions. This was our first debate and it went really well. |
Sharing Thoughts about the Debate
After the debate, the air still seemed a little tense. We each hugged our opponents and everyone was still friends. The atmosphere warmed up again and everyone began to share their thoughts. So how about reading? Well everyone still had their own answer. |
Teachers’ Thoughts and Comments
Our teachers also gave us some encouragement and suggestion about today’s debate. They said that this was the first debate we’d done and seeing everyone collect information, debate and work a team was great! They hoped that after the debate, we would think about what reading means to us. |
The Use of Thinking Tools in Reading
After the activity, the teachers introduced us to the three kinds of online creative thinking tools, showing evidence, seeing reason and visual ranking to help us reorganize our thoughts.
These three tools cannot only be used to draw cause and effect diagrams, but also they can also sort factors, and they can be used to collate the main points of a debate. They help us to debate and think!
In the future perhaps we could hold an online debate! |
