Famous Building

        The old Bai-Chuan hospital, which is located near the household registration office on Jong-Shan Road is a very famous building in the “no sky” street area. It has once been elected as the representative building on Jong-Shan Road. Bai-Chuan hospital was set up by Mr. Chen Bai-Chuan. Dr. Chen Bai-Chuan was born in 1897. He had extraordinary intelligence. During his studying in public school, he is always praised by his teacher for his outstanding calligraphy and thus made him a great calligrapher as well as an excellent doctor.

Mr. Chen's Biography

       After Mr. Chen Bai-Chuan graduated from Lukang public secondary school, he was accepted by Taiwan Medical School and served in the school’s subsidiary hospital after his graduation in 1921. After two years, as an only son, he was demanded by his parents to return to Lukang and opened Bai-Chuan hospital on today’s Jong-Shan Road (that is, “no sky” market area). Bai-Chuan hospital is not only famous for its obstetrics and gynecology department but also its internal medicine, surgical, and pediatrics departments.

        Dr. Chen Bai-Chuan was a very nice person. He not only ran his own hospital but also served as the school doctor of the Wun-Kai elementary school. He also has served in Lukang Chuan-Jao Beadhouse, Lukang Sanitary Office, and Lukang Civil Service Group’s subsidiary hospital. Dr. Chen Bai-Chuan served as a doctor for 65 years and healed tens of thousands patients. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 92. He had 15 children and each of them was outstanding.

      Dr. Chen Bai-Chuan take “healing people, healing the country” as his responsibility. He thought that as a doctor, he should base on medical theories, target civilians’ health and achieve the goal of building a strong country with healthy civilians by means of medical measures. Mr. Chen Bai-Chuan always responded to patients’ call and didn’t charge the poor patients and thus his medical morality and skills was well-known in the Lukang coastal area.

The Frontspiece

        Today, Bai-Chuan hospital still lies in the Jhongshan road. Although it's not as crowded as it used to be, but the unique frontispiece still catches the eye of tourists. The building, famous of its frontispiece, is also a precious heritage to Lukang. As we walk by the street, we cannot but fix our eyes on the building.
