Teacher Chen: Please ask about what you didn’t understand while you collected data. Children, say hello to Mr. and Mrs. Jhuang.

Ya-Ru: Mr. Jhuang. How old is your stationary store?

Jhuang: Tens of years old. It’s been several generations since my ancestor got this store. Come, let me introduce the structure of the house to you.

(Taking everyone inside the house.)

Yi-Sin: Wow, the house is so deep in its length. It is even deeper than the herbal store we went to last time.

Jhuang: All of the houses on the “no sky” street are deep in length. My house is not the deepest one. There are houses that are 60 meters deep and the deepest houses are more than 90 meters deep. I'll take you to visit other houses later.

Cun-Yi: Oh. Well, what is the well for?

Jhuang: Oh, because there used to be a lot of bandits. With this well, we don't  have to worry about water supply being cut. In addition, water used to be essential for working so it was more convenient to have a well. Come, I’ll show you other houses.

(Jhuang led the group walked to a nearby cloth store.)                  TOP

Owner of the cloth store (as cloth in the following): Hello, children.

Geng-Wei: Could you tell us about the history of your store?

Cloth: I'm the fourth generation and my ancestor's job was cloth dyeing.

Yi-Chuan: This house is so old! Is it older than a hundred years?

Cloth: This house had been rebuilt or it would be older. Come, I’ll show you my treasure.

(Taking out an old seal)

Wei Syuan-Ting: Wow, it is so delicate. Could you stamp it on my book?

(Taking out a notebook)

Cloth: Sure. (Stamping). Come, I’ll show you the inside of the house.        TOP

All: Oh, the length of the house is so long.

Huang Jhu-Jun: Is the courtyard meant for sky light?

Cloth: Right, or we wouldn’t be able to see anything inside the house.

Jhuang: I’ll take them to another house.

(The group said goodbye to the owner of the cloth store and headed for another store selling fishing nets.)

All: Hello.

Owner of the fishing net store (as fishing in the following): Hi, children.

Yi-Sin: There seems to be a lot of stores selling fishing nets in the neighborhood.

Fishing: That’s right. There were not only business but also fishery in Lukang, so there are a lot of fishing net stores and it is convenient for the fishermen to have their nets fixed or buy a new one.

Syu Ya-Ru: (Looking at the roof) You had your skylight at the entrance?

Fishing: No. This front part of this house was demolished when the “no sky” was deconstructed. Our skylight, nevertheless, was built more close to the front. Come, I’ll show you.

(The group walked upstairs)

Huang Jhu-Jun: Wow, the stairs are so steep.

Fishing: That’s right. In order to save space, the stairs are narrow and steep.

Wei Cyuan-Ting: We can see downstairs from here.

Fishing: Right. This used to be a pawnshop and the owner could monitor the staff working down there.                                                                                                                          TOP
