The “Stories of the Forty-fourth South Village” project is just like a root-seeking tour of mine. All I heard from Grandpa was that he used to be a soldier, and had been living in the military dependents' village since he was a child. The colorful life in the military dependents' village has been a wonderful memory to Grandpa. Now I know that originally most of the military dependents' village residents were from the Mainland with the army. In the past, people led a life with deficient living necessities, but they just reconciled themselves to the tough situation and strived to make the best of it. On the other hand, our life now is so wealthy. Mom and Dad always make sure that I am adequately provided, so I shall cherish everything I have now. However, it’s a pity that the house in which Grandpa lived in the Forty-fourth South Village had been demolished; otherwise I really want to see the house Grandpa lived in!

I am so happy to participate in this Si-Si Nan Cun project, in which I get a lot of interesting and valuable knowledge such as the related history and the village life. After I joined the research team, I realized that although the nearby Forty-fourth South Village seems small, it used to be very large and her history is very interesting, and the South Village food is wonderful as well! I also learned that the villagers formed a unified society in which families shared with one another, and as long as someone was in trouble, no matter what it was, they were going to roll up their sleeves and help, and that’s what I greatly admire.

Ms. Li took us to visit the Museum of Military Dependents' Villages in the Forty-fourth South Village, and we also tasted the delicious snacks, visited Si-Si Nan Cun cultural worker Mr. Chen Chinghsiang, and at last we also watched the film of the Si-Si Dragon. In the film we saw that the Dragon was like a real dragon! I heard a lot of stories which are meaningful to me, and I had a wonderful time participating in this significant project.

Last semester we used to participate in the activities of Si-Si Nan Cun with our computer teacher Ms. Li on Wednesdays. At first, I didn't know anything about the Village, but later on I gradually got familiar with it and knew more about it. We ate delicious military dependents' village snack, and had fun learning together with my good friends Ruoxuan Li and Anchen Wang. I think life was hard in the Forty-forth South village, so we should be content with what we’ve got and cherish everything in the present.

When I came to Si-Si Nan Cun for the first time, all I felt was that it was a building with historic background. It had a history of more than 50 years. After listening to several elders talking about it, I came to realize the hardship the villagers had before. 44 South village households are mutual aid partners in the past, and they struggle over their Village. What I learned from them is that we should cherish the present, and learn to cooperate with people and help each other out.

In this project I found that life had been so hard for the villagers in early days, much harder than ours. For example, they were so poor that they couldn’t afford to buy meat to eat, so they went catching loaches in the ditches. Although they led a tougher life, but it seemed that they had a lot of things to play with, and they could go swimming as well. I wish I can go back to the scene in the past, and I really want to know how it was like to have a creek which is not far from home.
