Our Difficulties

Ming-hsien Hsu

We have continuously faced difficulties since we joined the Cyberfair project. For example, we did not have enough time for the project, since we had to go to classes and after-class tutoring. We had so little time together, that we had to use our winter break to catch up on project work. We heard that there were more than 100 articles in a previous Cyberfair project. Because of the academic pressures, many students could not continue. Because of this, we did not have enough members, and thus, our production was limited. We knew that as long as we worked together, we should be able to complete all the required documents. Every time a new activity was scheduled, I would encourage myself that I can do it well. I remember in a class promotion, when I stood in front of a teacher and students to explain the activity subject and content, I suddenly acted like a dumb person and could not open my mouth. I had no choice but to keep going; however, I was so nervous that I kept forgetting the lines and had to let another member finish it. I felt ashamed then, but I also learned valuable experience. I have gained a lot from this Cyberfair project.

My difficulty in the beginning was that I did not have enough time to work on this project since I had many other club activities. Also, we were required to finish all afterthoughts, so there was really not enough time. Many students dropped out one by one; even I can’t believe I stayed with this until now. Also, I liked to have lunch breaks, but in order to attend the Cyberfair project meetings, I could not have the break. When I went back to class, I was so tired. I felt sleepy in class, and had to work on myself to overcome this difficulty.

After I joined the Cyberfair project, since our recruiting time was late, we were behind on our progress for the Cyberfair project. Because of this, we had to increase meeting times. Also due to classes, we had to cut short the meeting time and increase our teachers’ burdens. Due to heavy academics and lots of afterthoughts that needed to be written, many members dropped out and could not continue (only a few left at the end). I tried very hard to enter my afterthoughts and point of views, but my typing is not quick enough (I have made a big improvement, but am still far behind Ming-hsien Hsu). When I typed a report, I never had much to say, so I randomly put proverbs into my report and troubled the editing teachers. My teacher had to ask me to rewrite in one case (Oh my God!). I had to redo it by using the proverbs more carefully. Our typos cost teachers a lot of time to correct. Also, we failed in a class promotion due to stage fright. Even though we failed, I still learned a lot. I truly grew from failure.

The difficulty I faced when I joined the Cyberfair project was that I did not know how to write the report. Since I joined the Cyberfair project in the middle of its progress, and missed many activities and classes, I did not understand Shenjiang culture. With the instructor’s guidance and members’ help, I understood Shenjiang culture more and learned how to write a report by myself. Later on, we encountered another difficulty: we did not have enough time to meet. Therefore we could not produce enough reports. We used lunch breaks to get together and had to meet during almost every lunch break. We started to produce reports seriously, and the teachers pushed us very hard too, so this was resolved later. Now I learned a lot of new knowledge, so my life has become richer. Even though we have met some difficulties in the process, we overcame these one by one. We always encounter difficulties in our life, but as long as we can overcome these, they will turn into experiences and make us stronger when we meet our next difficulty. Therefore, we should try hard to overcome difficulties and not give up easily.

We have encountered many difficulties since we joined this team. Time was our big problem. For example, we needed to finish our reports within a required time, but in order to take care of homework at the same time, there was never enough time. One time, when I finished my homework, it was seven-thirty. I turned on my computer immediately and started to work on my report. When I finished the report, it was ten-thirty. In order to avoid working too late, I tried to finish my homework at school. This solved my problem. Other than report time, we also did not have enough time for drawing either. When Hsin-yu Li and I had to deliver a four-frame comic, it was during our final, so we could only spend one hour at home drawing. In one hour, I could only  draw one Shenjiang head without color. I had to prepare for the final during my morning self-study and lunch hour; after the final, I had only finished one draft. In order to finish that by the deadline, we had to draw pictures in the Office of Teaching Affairs for the entire afternoon. I focused on drawing but only finished the third picture after half the time had passed. When I started to draw the fourth picture, school was over. We finished the drawing with teamwork. We have to use time better from now on so that we can overcome difficulties.

Since I joined the Cyberfair project, the whole team has been trying very hard to write reports. Everyone was very busy, but we overcame difficulties. Quickly, we finished all reports in the last few classes. Another difficulty was that we didn’t have enough help, so we had to finish our work by ourselves. This was tough.

The deadline was getting close, but we kept making mistakes. Suddenly, we produced lots of typos, or our report did not match our subject. Various difficulties worried the teachers very much. It wasn’t only the teachers; we were becoming crazy from the pressures of so many reports. I think it’s my fault that I did not finish my regular work that the teacher assigned. I usually left these to the time very close to the deadline, then worked very hard to finish. Sometimes, we had to finish reports during a very short of time. We could only use lunch breaks to meet, or stay late at night to type reports. It was really tiring. From the start, many students continued to drop out of the team. Fewer members became part of our difficulty. Everyone knew, the fewer the members, the more effort everyone has to put in to participate in activities. To be honest, I should have been the one who wanted to drop out the most. First, my typing speed is very slow. When everybody was done, I was still working on mine. Second, I have too many classes to meet with the team or write reports. Now my typing speed has improved, and I learned how to schedule my time to finish the work assigned by teachers. I think, more or less, a team will encounter difficulty, and at the end, the winner is the one who learned how to resolve continuous difficulties.

When we first met, we did not know how to start, so our director took us to Luzhou Elementary School to see Shenjiang statues at the Shenjiang Carnival. Very soon, the most difficult part was coming; the director wanted to take us to interview people. Why did I say this was the most difficult part? It is because we have never done interviews before. Our director asked all the questions in the beginning of the interview, so we could learn from his demonstration. Later, we handled the rest of the interview. We could do teaching on campus as well. In fact, the most troublesome part was typing reports. We need to record every visit and activity. The reason I felt difficulty in writing reports is that I always stop in the middle of writing reports, when I cannot continue my inspiration and cannot move forward. Therefore, writing reports is my biggest headache, but I like to make speeches, since I do not have stage fright.
