"In 1998, there were less than 20 Taiwan films. In 2001, only 11 until
October. In 2006, Taiwan's film market share is only 1.62%. "
In a demanding market environment, Huang’s most direct impact on
Taiwan's film, of course, is the high quality works. From 1995 to 2011,
Huang involved in the production of more than more than 15 movies: with
a big budget or a small cost, commercially oriented or artistic style.
The Arrow Cinematic Gourp general manager Tian-gui Lin said: "Mr. Huang
is a very important role to promote Taiwan's film production. He
survived the hard time, and created a new wave with “Cape No. 7”in 2008.

Characteristics and Impact |
For a long time, Taiwan's film industry has been known around the world
to produce niche and artistic movies critics love. "Double Vision" tried
to break down the idea, and took Taiwan film to an unprecedented new
level, creating a new possibility. It was funded by Sony Columbia
Pictures, a budget of up to 7 million U.S. dollars (about 200 million NT
dollars). The production team came from all over the world, and the
movie was shot in Taiwan. It was a big production for the domestic film
industry in 2002.
Huang said that when he saw the original screenplay by Chao-Bin Su, he
wanted to cooperate with foreign film company. He contact Sony Columbia
Pictures in 2000, got Kuo-fu Chen to be the co-producer and the
"artistic director".
Another major breakthrough of "Double Vision" was trying to entertain
the audience. As the screenwriter said, "We just want to shoot an
entertainment piece." For the depression of the domestic film market, a
business-oriented “thriller” was the boldest attempt since the 1990s. |
The birth of a new style: "Silk" (2006)

Characteristics and Impact |
The budget of thriller "Silk" was NT $ 200 million. Its goal was clear—A
Hollywood-type movie, popular thriller, and big cast. Its commercial
attempt and operation were very specific.
Huang and director Su wanted to borrow the successful experience of the
"Double Vision". If "Double Vision" was a test of the mainstream
commercial market, "Silk" was a whole new style of film. For the subject
matter, it combined the oriental view of soul and a scientific point of
view. It spent a lot in production: "Kill Bill" cameraman Arthur Wong,
and the animation effects of "Spider-Man" series by Sing Choong Foo.
"Silk" was not able to compete with Hollywood films in the annual box
office. It was important for Taiwan's movie industry. |
A miracle-“Cape No.7"(2008)
|
Crew |

Producer : Jimmy Huang
Director, screenwriter : Te-sheng Wei
Cameraman : Qin-ding Chang
Soundtrack : Shengfei Lv
Budget : about NT $ 50 million
Box office : about NT $ 530 million (box-office record of Taiwan
film history) |
|
Director : Te-sheng Wei

Characteristics and Impact |
"Cape No. 7" cost NT $ 50 million. Jimmy said that from time to time
they faced the funding shortage. Responsible for the management and
control budget, he had pressure as much as the director, who was in a
mortgage debt. In Hengchun, they owed 170 thousand for lunchboxes. Jimmy
said that he kept saying "there will be money".
"Cape No.7" was a rare big production film in recent years, but it did
not spend on promotion. It was promoted through blogs and word of mouth,
regarded as a Taiwan Film miracle. On 12 December 2008, the official
total box office was $ 530 million.
In the eyes of many filmmakers, "Cape" is a symbol of mature domestic
market. It still has a great potential. "The biggest value of Cape is
that it serves as the largest support of Taiwan's film industry. Let
everyone know that we can achieve that," said veteran actor and director
Leon Dai. "A few years before, we've tried everything, but in vain.
Liberation in last year (2008) had good results," Te-sheng Wei casually
said.
Therefore, we can say that Jimmy Huang, Te-sheng Wei, and a lot of good
filmmakers continue to try new themes, novelty and change, and the
pursuit of a perfect creation for the audience. This atmosphere gave
birth to the "Cape". "Cape" marked a unique touchstone between the past
and future. Its successful experience opened a new path for "Monga"
(2010) and "chicken steak Hero" (2011). |

His two scripts “Want to die now" and "The Cabbie" are popular in the
domestic film industry film industry. 4 out of 7 of his scripts are
produced by Jimmy Huang. His first work "love elixir” was produced by
Huang.
Huang has mentioned more than once that Su is a genius. With Huang’s
faith in "Double Vision" and "Silk", these two films are big successes
in Taiwan film history. |
Te-sheng Wei

Wei had close relations with Huang. In
2000, Wei completed the screenplay of "Seediq Bale", and won the
"excellent screenplay prize” of Taiwan Government Information Office. He
raised two million to shoot the trailer of Seediq Bale, but the domestic
film market was still unable to hold up the epic. In 2002, Wei was
responsible for planning and studyboard in"Double Vision." In 2008, Wei
earned fame and fortune by "Cape No. 7", but he did not give up the
unfinished dream. Huang and Wei invested the total profit of Cape into "Seediq
Bale" with the additional $ 500 million. They worked together through
challenges. |
Ren-hao Xu
|
|
Senior Producer Ren-hao Xu said, "in the
film industry, it is apprenticeship to pass experience from generation
to generation" and "You're always looking for people you like to work
together and to grow together. He quit the job in advertising to the
film industry 10 years ago. His first film was to participate in the
"Double Vision" production, and he has been followed Huang since then.
Huang is his teacher, friend, and old partner.
(Note: Xu is the producer of "Monkey King", a cost of $ 0.9 billion.) |
Huang works and grow together with these like-minded partners all the
way, and nurtures many talents for Taiwan's film industry. |
