Lungshan Temple was built after a group of faithful raised 20,000 yuan in 1737, with contributions rolling in not only from Manka residents, but also from many other parts of Taiwan. A famous fengshui expert was brought in to ensure that the temple was situated auspiciously. The temple today contains a statues of Sakyamuni that was executed by Huang Tushui, who was from the Wanhua District and is recognized as Taiwanˇ¦s most famous sculptor of the 20th century. The main hall was destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt after Japan returned Taiwan to Chinese rule, and you can find an inscription on a stone pillar that dates the reconstruction to 1955. |
The temple's construction shows outstanding craftsmanship and fine materials, including granite and basalt from Fujian, and the temple is certainly the most ornately imposing one in all of Taipei. |
