Against All Odds---Make the Dream Come True
The junior corps asked Mrs. Qiu how she overcame the challenges of learning Raoping Hakka all by herself and how she crossed out all the difficulties and successfully revives the language. Faced all the questions and curiosity, Mrs. Qiu took out several study notes, 6000 cards with her hand written Hakka vocabularies, hundreds of test sheets, some handmade pictures for Hakka teaching, notes with Hakka words and sentences, videos and DVDs...Answers were already clear in her diligence.
The Heartbreaking Reason
Speaking of her self-learning days, Mrs. Qiu said back in 2011, when she was writing her 9th village history book “The Little Heart of Puxin---Hexin”(《合興小埔心》), she interviewed a Hakka elder in a grocery store opposite to Dahu Elementary School. She happily told him that she is a Raoping Hakka too, but couldn’t speak the language. The elder’s response broke her heart: “This is betrayal....” “Give me a year and I will interview you in Hakka...”, said Mrs. Qiu. This was a serious warning. The school she was working for had done a survey, which showed 300 students registered for Hakka learning class yet there was no language teacher there, so they went to another city---Taichung, and asked a Sixian Hakka language teacher to teach the class. To Mrs. Qiu, this was heartbreaking. Changhua Yuanlin is the biggest residence of Raoping Hakka, but the teacher was a Sixian master. Why was that?

Mrs. Qiu agreed with her friend, Shilang Xu, who was also a Hakka master and the Chief of Taiwan Raoping Hakka Fellowship, that “Tao, Chu, Miao, Chang, these cities and counties that so many Hakkas live in, should have Raoping Hakka language classes in elementary schools. If they all learn Sixian Hakka or Hailu Hakka, there is little chance that Raoping Hakka can be passed down.” This was the challenge for Raoping Hakka here in Taiwan, not to mention the language had disappeared for 50 years. Mrs. Qiu thought, “We have to save our own language,” so she decided to learn the 100-year-absent ancient language.

Self-learning Raoping
Because there was no one taught Raoping Hakka in Changhua County, Mrs. Qiu took the Hakka Teaching Course in Changhua County, but she only learned some basic Sixian Hakka, which couldn’t meet her needs. As a result, she registered the 2012 Hakka Certification held by Hakka Affairs Council, encouraging herself to learn Raoping Hakka wisely. She planned that she had to well study all three Hakka learning books for beginner, intermediate, and advanced in nine months, listen to 20 CDs, about 6,500 words and sentences for listening, speaking, reading, and writing. She planned to remember 30 sentences a day, 200 sentences a week, and 900 sentences a month...With hand writing, she also study Hsinchu and Zhuolan Raoping Hakka, comparing and contrasting the sounding of these two. After 9 months’ diligence, she passed the Advance Hakka Certification with high scores and received Raoping Hakka teaching certificate from the Hakka Affairs Council next spring. She didn’t stop there. She moved on to the Advanced Taiwanese Test and passed.

Writing Teaching Materials and Overcoming Difficulties
Therefore, Mrs. Qiu embarked on the revival of Raoping Hakka in 2013, setting up Raoping Hakka student clubs in the schools and proposing the Hakka Affairs Council to open family Raoping Hakka classes. There had been more than 40 parents and children passed the Hakka Language Proficiency Test—A Hundred Sentence Certification. That successfully pushed Raoping Hakka revival to a new level. However, Mrs. Qiu thought the materials were limited, since there were no other local materials for Changhua except the ones from Hakka Affairs Council. It confined the revival of the language. She believed “writing local materials is the root for the revival”, therefore she started exchanging with Ms. Peifen Zhan, who was also a Raoping Hakka master in Zhoulan, and Mr. Qianqing Zhan. They were touched by Mrs. Qiu’s determination and they fully supported promoting correct pronunciation as well as experiment teaching. Beginning from June 2015, Mrs. Qiu used her literary and writing talent to write “Changhuaized” Raoping teaching materials day and night. In July and August, she set up two family Raoping Hakka classes and the students all loved her materials. From September to December, schools and communities set up advanced Raoping Hakka classes for families. And at the national contest in November, they won three golds, two silvers, and two bronzes, which was indeed remarkable. Many journalists came and interviewed them.

Let Everyone Know Changhua Raoping Hakka
In order to record the successful revival of Raoping Hakka, Mrs. Qiu, who won the international platinum prizes straight for two years, worked along with other teachers to guide the junior corps to set up Chinese/English website to compete in International CyberFair. Mrs. Qiu turned her diverse teaching materials into different forms of performances and went to stage for five times in February 2016. There were class parties, school Hakka week programs, community events, World Mother Tongue Day, National Hakka Day, and so on. Even the Hakka TV program called us. They would love to shoot a program about Changhua Raoping Hakka culture.

Building Chang Rao Hakka Oasis Practically
When the corps asked about her visions for the revival, she answered in Raoping Hakka, “There is still a long way and we have to work hard together to achieve that goal.” (共下煞猛直直行,勞力勞力好得好得你). She thanked all the supporters, no matter new or old. She also believed that one has to insisted on the right thing and emphasized that every person matters when it comes to reviving a language. Only through making efforts together can we improve the desert, building an oasis for Raoping Hakka. As for the visions for the revival, the practical Mrs. Qiu said her recent move would be:
1. Continue advanced family Hakka classes in the schools and communities
2. Actively exchange and teach Chang Rao Hakka for kids
3. Plan to set up Changhua Raoping Hakka organization
4. Assist the authorities with Chang Rao Hakka resource integration and promotion
5. Help finish the repair of the heritage Yongjing Loyal House and set up Chang Rao Hakka learning center
6. Write about local culture and literature in Raoping Hakka
7. Help folks identify the once absent ancient language, encourage people to speak Raoping Hakka more often
8. Make use of technology, enhance distant learning and promoting

The Revival is like a Movie
Mrs. Qiu said she studied special education and consulting earlier in life and had been school consulting director and promoting special education for 20 years. She made good use of her consulting skills to make the revival work better. With her zero failure on special education promotion, she started Raoping Hakka revival from nothing to something. When there was no challenge, she would cherish it; and when there was a hard time, she would change and surprise everyone with silver lining.
