Project Overview

We expect that this project can be shared with more people and further ask them
to think about their attitudes and values toward the medical profession. Moreover,
this project will hopefully work with different professions for more resources, and thus
fighting for the well-being of the humans, community, and even the whole world.

Our Category: Local Corporate Organization

Our community
The school, located in the old downtown of Taichung City which borders the Central, North, and West Districts, is an old and famous elementary school. For 85 years, numerous prominent students have graduated from this school. Mr. Chou Ju-Chuan, who set up Chung Shan Medical University and its hospital in South District, also graduated from the elementary school. In 1955, as a dentist, Mr. Chou decided to train more dentists for his hometown Taichung. Therefore, he had kept asking people for funding and support for 5 years. Finally, he set up “Chung Shan Dentist College” in 1960. Now, there are 6 colleges, 21 departments, and 17 graduate programs in Chung Shan Medical University with nearly 30,000 graduates. The University’s dentist clinic becomes the medical center of Daqing Branch, Chung Shing Branch, and Wen Shin Branch (College of Oral Medicine Center) with 7 medical units and 4 developmental centers. These institutions are equipped with advanced facilities and medical services. Thus, they become one of the three major medical centers in Taichung City.

Abstract of Project
We are students from the advanced class. In the course Biological Technology, our teacher introduced Taichung City’s medical environment and medical centers. When talking about cancer and genetic issues, our teacher mentioned Mr. Chou Ju-Chuan’s morality and dedications to the medical profession, and this really impressed us. Therefore, we would like to visit Chung Shan Medical University because it focuses on humanistic education and prioritizes the patients’ interest. Then, we decided to learn the University’s hospital through data collection, visiting, interviews, and questionnaires. Our question is what impact and contribution the integration of medical systems will have for the community and its residents. In the course of research, we even held panel discussions and seminars with our teacher for in-depth thinking. We expect that this project can be shared with more people and further ask them to think about their attitudes, values, and vision toward the medical profession.

Our Working Environment with Internet
A. Hardware Facilities:
We will use school Internet to work. There are 6 computers and 5 laptops in Counseling Center. There are even 10 computers in each advanced classroom for students’ learning and research work. Each computer can access the Internet and makes a connection to the Taichung Educational
Web Center with optical fibers. The laptops will use Wifi to work.
B. Software Facilities:
The software we use is the materials from the IT course, including Namo WebEditor 2006, Namo Flash Creator, CyberLink Power Director, PowerPoint 2010, and even iSpring Free. The software also includes
Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel.

What problems have we met and solved?

A. The Expertise Needed for the Project
Medical studies and technology involve difficult expertise, so we had to spend much time understanding the medical terms, facilities, and equipment so that we could move onto the following research activities, which is a big challenge for the 5th graders at elementary school. Certainly, this big challenge was often an obstacle for this project. Hence, we used many learning activities to fill up our knowledge gap if necessary. For us, this project seemed like an impossible mission.

B. Lack of Efficiency in IT Work

Although it was practical to use all the software we learned in IT class, we couldn’t increase its efficiency. We’re slow typewriters even though we’re familiar with using computers; we spend a day processing a picture despite our creativity for the photos. Fortunately, all the classmates almost spare their time for our project. We even worked together with everyone’s talents; for example, Min-Jun is good at picture software, and then he will focus on film-editing and perfection; Chao-shin and Jia-chi are fast typewriters and they took charge of paperwork. Thus, technical mastery, professional cooperation, and perseverance are the key to solving the problems.

C. Lack of Careful Judgment and Organization

The values, ethics, system, law, and even life issues from medical studies all require high-level and profound thinking for research. Although the students from advanced class have a better grasp of emotional and critical thinking, they are still innocent kids. Lack of maturity influences their judgment on social values, and it is difficulty to make a conclusion from the activities. Hence, we increase the interaction by story-telling such as film seminars, interviews with surgeons, and even mental talk with cancer patients. Then, these real cases helped the students discuss and express their opinions and feelings in a practical way.

D. The Restriction on Medical Ethics, Privacy, and Safety

There are many taboos of visiting a medical institution, and the students had to pay attention to the community patients’ privacy protection. For safety, the elementary school students are not allowed to access some places in a medical institution. Therefore, there are many restrictions on photo-taking and data collection, and the subjects were not enough for our research. In that way, all the data (including videos) we acquired must be authorized by the hospital for use on the webpages. Some interviewees’ faces should be mosaicked, and the questionnaires should use pseudonyms or anonymity for the subjects’ names.

E. The Restriction of Cross-District Systems on Holiday Activities

There are over two-thirds cross-district students at our school. Urban students like us have so many talent classes that we have little time doing the medical services for the community on holidays or after school, and students couldn’t finish the take-home exercises. In that case, we used morning self-study time, lunch break, Wednesday afternoons, and 5 sessions from advanced class to make up for the loss of research time. The students were self-disciplined and showed up every time.

Reflection
A hospital can use business management strategies to make itself more efficient and profitable, and it can develop advanced equipment to treat any diseases. However, if the medical staff forgets to give respect and concern to the patients, then they just cure their health but not their mentality. Therefore, the medical staff should always keep a promise in mind: Regard the patients as their own relatives. Likewise, the community residents shouldn’t fail the medical staff’s dedications and never put pressure on them with unreasonable requests.
We’re very lucky to learn something and grow up more from this project. Although some of us felt that doctor’s work is too painstaking, they didn’t change their mind but further make sure of a doctor’s importance and influence on the society and human life. As Mr. Chou Ju-Chuan said, a doctor should be obliged to treat patients’ health and mind.
