2. Toy Development History of Taiwan
The toy industry was once the brightest star in the economic development of Taiwan. It can be divided into 5 stages:
Beginnings (1961 ~ 1970): Popular toys of the time: menko, bamboo swords During this period, the industry cooperated with governmental economic policies with an orientation towards export. |
Expansion of Exports (1971 ~ 1980): Popular toys of the time: Rubik’s Cube The U.S. and Japan began to invest in Taiwan after 1971, which accelerated the growth of the toy industry. |
Economic Change (1981~1986): Popular toys of the time: Barbie/Stuffed Dolls/Transforming Robots The plentiful supply of labor and the increasing demand for toy products from developed Western nations helped to create an export value that reached a record of US$1.0078 billion in 1987. |
Industry Transformation (1987~1997): Popular toys of the time: Remote controlled cars / BB guns / Tamagotchi The ending of martial law in 1988, the changing of the social environment, the raising of workers’ consciousness, and a lack of toy design expertise meant there was a lack of new products. The toy industry in Taiwan entered its dark time. |
Transfer of Industry Overseas (after 1998): Popular toys of the time: 4WD cars / Hello Kitty In recent years, rising living standards in Taiwan have spurred the design of new and innovative products to satisfy consumers' needs. |
