While
most of the advanced countries are worrying about people
having less children, and how this is effecting society
and economy, the news is reporting, "The Greenhouse
Effect is causing global climates to warm, especially
this winter. Many places like Europe did not snow, while
other places that shouldn't have did……"
Humans have controlled Earth's
resources for thousands of years through are knowledge,
but because of our lack of self control, we are instead,
harmed by our actions. There is only one Earth, and even
if there are less children in the future, if we don't
allow a chance for nature to recover, we will walk onto
the path of self destruction.
Bin Jiang Elementary School is a newly established
school of a year, we don't have many students. However,
our students and teachers have come together like a
large family, knowing and caring for each other; the
members of this team have come from different schools,
but now that they are here, in the short amount of time
allowed, they have chosen a research topic, built a
research outline, completed research, and finished a
webpage. These different stages have allowed our
children to understand and care for the future of this
world together, and with love, responsibility, and
devotion, they have finally completed this project. We
hope that we can sow a seed of dreams in their hearts,
and with this project, attract more people to care about
the Earth together, to love our environment, and do what
they should, since we all are citizens of Earth. |

The most important responsibility of Earth's
citizens is to love our planet. Our children are the
leaders of the 21st century, and they need to
be conscious about the dangers of our environment. They
need to be able to look at the world, and build up a
broad and insightful perspective. The intensification of
the greenhouse effect is Earth's nightmare. Only the
devotion and care of everyone in the world will help
heal Earth's wounds, and rejuvenate this planet which we
all depend on. Leading our children to understand the
greenhouse effect; leading them to take action and
reduce. The topics of our lessons are serious, but, the
activities are vivid. Our teachers used their creativity
and combined environmental issues. They led them to join
in Taiwan's elementary student greenhouse effect
reduction plans, from themselves to family members, from
school to community. Our teachers and students, with
high morale, accomplished the feat of lowering the
combined carbon dioxide emission of their families from
114.797 to 105.607 liters, an 8% drop. This has been the
most meaningful contribution of the first anniversary of
the establishment of our school. Though the lessons and
activities have stopped for now, our actions to reduce
will never stop. Class 60 has delivered a beautiful
report card, which stands for our love of the planet. We
hope that more Environmental Scouts will join the ranks
now! |

We
see infinite possibilities in children.
If not for a lesson, what would be
the chances a student would have noticed these issues? A
research topic like this, might it seem too deep, too
boring?
A new school, new team, plus the
pressure of school activities and homework, and such a
huge research project to finish. What are the chances?
The many questions I had were gone
however, with the busy but enthusiastic students.
Leading a class of students without background on this
topic to the point that they slowly understood much of
it; students completing their reports and diaries, then
automatically discussing what to do next, even though us
teacher's were too busy to help them. After reading a
report on an Antarctic iceberg floating towards New
Zealand, the students came to me to tell me this. After
watching "An Inconvenient Truth", the children told me
about the debut of "The While Planet", and excitedly
discussed when to watch it. Accompanying the children
from learning about the greenhouse effect, to caring
about our environment, to finally taking action to
change the environment, we privately hoped that they
would start changing from small everyday attitudes.
Comforting enough, they can always do more then we think
they can, and automatically. I deeply feel that all
children need is inspiration, and some more space. With
this, their future development will soar like an eagle
in the sky, and our world just might be better than it
is now. |
