The Old Home Booming Period
Relocation

At its peak there were close to 500 families in the tribe, and with a population count that ranked top of all Paiwan Tribe’s villages it was always believed by scholars to be the major developmental place of Paiwan Tribe. In 1913 during the Japanese Occupation period the Lower Paiwan Village (196 families) and Tjaljavakung Tribe (39 families) were investigated as one Village. The records are as follows:

    • Lower Paiwan Village sits on the left shore of upstream Ailiao South River at approximately 800-850m above sea level on the East face of Tjuliljing Mt. and about 39km from Pingtung City.In 1913 only 12 communities were left, as many had combined or relocated due to natural disasters, therefore the number of communities gradually lessened. After 1945 only 4 villages, Liumar, Tusantaf, Balalan and Liwakao remained.Records showed:Tucunu(46 families), Tumalagan (6 families), Kalapayan (15 families), Liumar (34 families), Tusantaf (23 famiilies), Balalan (30 families), Liwakao (13 families), Masilid (8 families), ipel (14 families) and Validiyan (3 families) formed a total of 196 families across the 11 communities.
    • Tjaljavakung Village sits on the left shore of uptstream Ailiao South River at approximately 750m above sea-level on the Northeast face of itjesadjemljau Mt. West of Lower Paiwan Village. There were approximately 40 families and its land was mostly owned by the Chief’s Qupulu House.Presently it has relocated to Kunshan Alley in Majia Townshi

In 1931 there were still 1604 people living in the 12 communities, but investigation revealed that there were more than 12 communities; however these were mostly small clusters of few families. The population of this village began to decline in 1934, reason being that in 1933 mountain-slides in Tutsinok made some communities inhospitable. Thus a request was made to the Japanese administration to form the current Majia Township Liangshan Village and relocated parts of Paiwan and Majia.Consequently some of Liangshan Village’s people were relocated from Paiwan Village. In 1947 there were still 654 people,in 1959 70 people of 15 families relocated to Santimen Village, 435 people in 98 families moved to Sanhe Village, while 53 people in 10 families moved to Jiayi Village, which greatly reduced the population, although in 1963 778 people were still lived in the village.
