Sweet potato is originally a very important crop which is for food and feedstuff in Taiwan. And the area of cultivation is second to that of paddy field. Because of the income increase, the consumers eat sweet potato less and less. So the supply of sweet potato is also reducing. Now it is not only used for cooking but also changed into all-purpose like the raw materials of industry, food processing, and feedstuff…etc. The breed of sweet potato has also changed with the use and the development of multiplicity aspect.

The use of breeding sweet potato on biotechnology is focused on the antibiosis from bugs and the quality of amelioration. According to the antibiosis from bugs, they emphasize on those bugs that have not found the available antigen, for example, the disease of sweet potato virus, and Sweet Potato weevil. It is hard to prove effective for the harm of these bugs which is adopted by the regular breeding. The best way is using the biotechnology and making the other fountainhead of gene to lead-in the cultivar of sweet potato.
 
 
 

The achievement of sweet potato breeding is still excellent, in addition to breed the cultivars for feedstuff, they also have different use of new cultivars for amylum and vegetable. At the same time, the new cultivars can accommodate every season to breed. The new breeding of cultivars in sequence has more than 50. They are Tai-agri No. 31 to No.70, Tainan No.1to No.16, Taoyuan No. 1 to No. 3…..etc. Among others, the Tai-agri No. 65 is high protein which can achieve in 6%. The cultivars for cooking are Tai-agri No. 57, No. 66, and No. 70; as for amylum are Tai-agri No. 44 and Tanan No. 14, and for leafy sweet potato are Tai-agri No. 71 and Taoyuan No. 2.

When looking into the reason why sweet potato breeds successfully in Taiwan, one would attribute it to Taiwan's geographic location that falls in the sub-tropic zone, and its pluperfect communal facilities in agriculture, effective agricultural research institute and agriculturist organization in each countryside, developmental agriculture processing, and diligent, aggressive agriculturist From 1989 to now, the areas of cultivation are keeping at 100 acres for mainly eating and food processing. In the future, the goals of breeding sweet potato shall be moving toward refinement and specialization. The goals for future development will be to reduce total yield but with improved quality, emphasizing freshness, uniqueness, and diversification in processing products. It is hoped that sweet potato will become a food crop with both competitiveness and local characteristics. In order to further expand the usefulness of sweet potato, research into the healthy and life-beneficial aspect of sweet potato will be explored.
