The flagstones at Lungshan Temple are made of granite. The stones originally served as ballast in the hulls of ships coming over from Fujian Province. The ballast kept the lightly loaded ships from tipping over in high seas. That is why we call these flagstones “ballast stones” in Chinese.

From the moment you first set foot in Lungshan Temple, you are walking on stones that accompanied our forebears across the waters. Just as they once lent their weighty stability to sailing junks, they now lend a similar feeling of weight and stability to Lungshan Temple.
