Dr. Yan-Hwa Wu
Academician Yan- Hwa Wu became the official principal of Yang Ming University yesterday after being the substitute principal for one and a half year. The vice minister of Ministry of Education claimed in the ceremony, Dr. Yan is the first female principal of a national university, her achievement is the paragon of everything female scientists.
Fifty year-old Yan- Hwa Wu graduated from National Taiwan University and had the degree of Agricultural Chemistry, the graduate school of Biochemistry and Molecular virology, and had Biochemistry PHD in University of Tennessee. She returned to Taiwan in 1978 and taught Chemistry in Yang Ming University, specialized in Molecular Virology, and famous in the research of Hepatitis C. She has had five outstanding research awards in the National Science Committee and the academic award of education.
The director of National Health Institute Cheng-Wen Wu said that according to statistics, the number of females admitted by universities is not less than boys, especially in the area of life sciences; yet a female scientist being outstanding in teaching and teaching, and becoming a principal of National University, is rare in other countries as well. The most remarkable is Yan- Hwa Wu has returned back twenty years before, her every outstanding researches are done in Taiwan, being selected as an Academician and the principal is what she deserved.

A year ago, the vice professor of pharmacology Sheng-Yu Hong held her baby and announced shared the good news of which her husband Wen-Hon Chong had a PHD. Yesterday, Wen-Hon Chong was the one who was holding the baby, because Sheng-Yu Hong was receiving outstanding female scientist – newcomer award on the stage.
Yan- Hwa Wu, the principal of Yang Ming the outstanding female scientist and Mei-Hwei Chang, Pediatric professor of National Taiwan University both received outstanding female scientist award.
The ex director of Academian Sinica Yuan-Che Lee and the committee member of Minister of State office Chi-Lon Tseng both mentioned in the ceremony that the opportunity Taiwan offers for female isn’t ideal enough.
However, Yan- Hwa Wu claimed there are 58% girls in master’s and 46% in doctor’s; there are also 55% of female office directors. She believed females are no longer discriminated, “females shouldn't limit themselves”.

National Chiao Tung University has selected the professor of yang Ming University Yan- Hwa Wu as the next term of principal. Next year’s 1st February, Yan- Hwa Wu will become the first female principal of NCTU.
Sixty-two year oldYan- Hwa Wu has been the principal of Yang Ming for ten years and received the outstanding female scientist award this year. She was graduated from National Taiwan University and had the degree of Agricultural Chemistry, the graduate school of Biochemistry and Molecular virology, and had Biochemistry PHD in University of Tennessee.
Yan- Hwa Wu works sixteen hours a day but always seems energetic, the secret is to “sleep well”. She said a good sleep could make you more efficient; the best way to make you sleep better is to “watch films”.
NCTU alumnus Ming-Chi claimed that Yan- Hwa Wu has an excellent educational background and has been through lots of professional careers. She is motivated and professional, is able to organize the biotechnology field in NCTU, “we all look forward”.

Yan- Hwa Wu pointed out yesterday that in the future, NCTU’s fortes are going to be better (e.g. Computer Science, Administration…etc.), and cross field and cross school cooperation have to be strengthened.
Yan- Hwa Wu is currently the exclusive professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Yang Ming and an Academian. She is specialized in Biomedical.
She said, formerly in the UST (University System of Taiwan), the four universities have different emphasis. For instance, Yang Ming emphasized Biomedical; Chiao Tung develops mainly on computer science. Schools could supplement each other.
