Dr. Jacqueline Whang-Peng

The academician Jacqueline Whang-Peng from Academia Sinica

has won the first “ L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards For Women in Science.

 

  Jacqueline Whang-Peng said, “it might be more difficult for a female scientist to achieve their goal in life, compare to male scientist. However, I believe, if you make sure yourself have done everything very well, success is nothing difficult.”

  Jacqueline Whang-Peng  admitted that, it is very difficult and hard for women to be a scientist, and a good wife, mother at the same time. Therefore, it is very important for the women who want to become a scientist, to marry a husband who can take care of you and understand you.

  After Jacqueline Whang-Peng  graduated from National Taiwan University in Medical, she went to United State and studied the Chromosomes in Human Cancer Cell. Later, when she proved and found out the cancer cell is caused by the mutation in chromosome, she won the Arthur Flemming Award and became the Academician in Academia Sinica.

 After working at DOH of United State for 33 years, she left her family, went back to Taiwan and had the Medical Oncology specialist training. She encouraged cancer clinical and the work to prevent the cancer. The researcher Cheng-Wen Wu in the National Health Research Institute complemented her as “The Mother of Oncology”.

 In May, she is going to represent Taiwan and attend the “L'ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards For Women in Science”ceremony in UNESCO headquarters of Paris.
