Project Overview

The contest category we are attending is:

Historical Landmarks

Description of Our Community:

Wuxing Elementary School is located in Xinyi District, which is the heart of Taipei City. The natural landscape of the nearby Elephant Mountain is rich and beautiful. The natural and cultural atmospheres are both satisfied in the area. For years, the surrounding area of Wuxing Elementary School has been developed into a prosperous community, which is a mixture of residence and commerce. Taipei Medical University Hospital and City Hall Station of MRT are both only 10 minutes’ walk away from the school.

Summary of Our Project:

There is an ancient path near Wuxing Elementary School, which is called Tiao-Mi Historic Trail. We would like to walk around it and explore it’s origin and history. We hope that more people will get to know Tiao-Mi Historic Trail through our website.

Our Computer and Internet Access:

The Internet Access in the Campus: Students and teachers use local area network, T1, in Wu Xing Primary School. There is a virtual host in the computer lab. Teachers can set each computer to cooperate with the learning schedule process before class and make students learn more efficiently.

Problems We Had To Overcome:

There is very little information available on the Tiaomi Trail (also known in English as the Sold Rice Trail) either on the Internet or in print, but this is just what made us all the more determined to seek out first-hand knowledge. We would have very much liked to talk to elder residents who knew Dexing Mine during its heyday, or find film of Wuxing Street or the farmland there, but we didn't manage this. However, the clues we have seen in video provided by the village headman have enabled us to gradually build up a picture of how the trail originally looked.

Our Project Sound Bite:

Be concerned with local environment and history. Preserve precious memories belonging to us.

Project Elements

How the Research Project combines with the Nine-Year Integrated Curriculums?

Nine-Year Integrated Curriculums The Combination
Language Field Improving our ability to interpret From interviews, written records and what we've gained from our own experience.
Mathematics Field Counting the rungs on the ladders as we walk the historical trail, to compare the differences between the old trail and the new.
Social Study Field Comparing different types of transportation used in the living environment.
Art & Humanity Field Collecting traditional artworks, living art and cultural information, or local artifacts peculiar to the area, to try to explain its characteristics and background.
Health & Physical Education Field Walking the trail strengthens us physically, while the beauty of the trail's scenery and the fresh air brings nourishment and happiness to our spirits.
Science & Technology Field Improvements achieved through web page production processes include: text layout, graphics, image retouching, and competence of digital video editing.

What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your Cyberfair project?

We use digital cameras, cellphones, computer programs, such as web design, illustration, video and audio, also the office programs. Library, books and newspapers, also the interview on the spot are also applied. Of course, the online resource plays the main role in our research project. Our website is mostly designed in Dreamweaver. We edited our pictures through the Painter, PhotoCap5.0, and Microsoft Office Picture Manager. And the videos were edited in the Windows Live Movie Maker. It is truly more efficient to use online learning programs than the traditional way. Because the first step of all our interviews starts from the internet communication. Without internet, we would not find so many interview targets.

In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Cyberfair project both on-line and in person.

We would like to introduce the most historical of the attractions in the Wuxing Elementary School vicinity to everyone, and hope you have the opportunity to take a leisurely trip along the trail yourselves.

What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We don’t need to reach far away for scenic spots of historical significance. There are valuable historical spots around waiting for us to explore.

Respect to the Intellectual Property Rights and the References

All the photos we used were taken by ourselves; the teachers and students of Wuxing Elementary School. Names are noted for information sources for those parts belonging to our interviews. As to the precious film of scenes already long gone, we could not personally shoot those parts; they have been used with the consent of bloggers, and credited accordingly.

Our Discoveries

The farmers who originally lived in Wuxing Street lived a really hard life. After growing the rice, they had to carry it up a mountain before it could even be sold, and the money used to maintain their livelihoods. Truly every grain of rice came only through hardship.
