1. History:
The building was built in 1921 and the home for
Kensei Shogakko(Jian Cheng Elementary School) of Japanese colonial period. It
was a school only for Japanese students.
After the World War II, the building was used as the City Hall for Taipei City
Government, which lasted for 50 years.
After the City Hall was moved to the present location, this building was
designated as a municipal cultural asset in 1996. For the purpose of reusing
historical buildings, this building was turned into a museum called Museum of
Contemporary Art, Taipei.
2. Architectural
characteristics:
The two-story brick building is a model of
architectural symmetry. Above the central hall is the spacious old assembly
with its high ceiling. A bell tower rises from the center of the roof
highlighting its distinctive architectural style.
(Note: During Japanese colonial period, Rixin Primary School was exclusive to
Taiwanese students, while Jian Cheng elementary school was only for Japanese
students.)
