To the people of Truku, Seediq, and Atayal, ˇ§facial tattooˇ¨ is the representation of divinity and glory. In the traditions, only those who are with facial tattoos are considered ˇ§real humansˇ¨, and can receive appropriate respects and statuses from others and the society.

For mountainous tribes of Taiwan, facial tattoos are symbols for the tribe, status, and honor. However, with the prohibition and suppression during the Japanese occupation, and the changes in our social system and the environment, facial tattoos have faded. The elders with facial tattoos have gradually passed away. This project is to present the art of facial tattoo in the Truku tribes. Through heritage, respect, education, and reflection, we hope that more people could learn about the meaning of facial tattoos.

Wanrong Township does not have elderly people with facial tattoo except from archive pictures in Wanrong Township Cultural and Art Museum.
