The Discovery Center of Taipei is the first city museum of Taiwan, it was Taipei Municipal Archives for the purpose of displaying the achievements of government, but those display were more serious and non-interactive way before. Since Taipei becomes an international city, the government thinks that we have to have a modern, technological museum to present the whole view of Taipei. Therefore the Taipei Municipal Archives was transformed to Discovery Center of Taipei as a window between the citizens and the city. Not only letting the citizens to understand more about the history and culture of this city, but also let travelers know more about Taipei. It has provided the result of promoting tourism. Discovery Center of Taipei started in December,2002 and completed second period of the theater’s construction in April 2004, which named Discovery Theater, the current exhibition areas mostly completed at that time.

The process from Taipei Municipal Archive to city museum is not so easy. After we read lots of articles of the former principle, Mr. Yi-Fu Kou , we realized that if we want to have a city museum with brand-new-type city museum, we need to escape from the stereotype of municipal archive, so we invited Mr. Han Pao-teh to be the director ,who is experienced in designing museums. The other members includes Mr. Yi-Fu Kou himself and others ,they all have participated the establishments of national museums before. Also, there were architects ,writers and the experts of aborigines in the group. They worked under the common consensus, and they jumped out of the traditional way to show the museum show in different style; in the theater construction, they cooperated with a English company for the technical.

Through the broadcast of media, the communication between museums and the combination with schools to let people know more about the Discovery Center of Taipei. We hope travelers and citizens can understand deeply about Taipei through this museum, so we built it in an interactive way to be the interface of Taipei Municipal Building, in order to make it friendly to the people, let the lively image of Taipei get into the people who come to know Taipei.

Discovery Center of Taipei is the first stop you can go if you’re going to know Taipei, through the lively and interactive display, you will explore Taipei in a new way and have new ideas about Taipei.

In 2008, Discovery Center of Taipei renewed some areas of the exhibition hall. It has several themes completed in Sep. 2008, in Ecological City we have “The People and Water in Taipei”, this theme includes “Blue Highway”, “The City Near The Bank”, and the “Bicycle Path Near The River-side”, and we have other new themes such as “The Flow of The East District”, ”The Wireless Taipei ”, “The Stage of Arts in Taipei”, and the Discovery Theater released a new movie in summer 2009 named “fascinating Taipei” to introduces Taipei from the tourists’ view.

To explore Discovery Center of Taipei, you can take the elevator up to 4th floor then downstairs, (and) there are some pictures about the cultural spot in Taipei on the stair sides. And ” the 12 indispensible things in Taipei ”outside the Discovery theater is the tourist guide which you should not miss. After visiting the Discovery Center of Taipei, we believe everybody will understand deeper and love much more about Taipei.

Although Discovery Center of Taipei is neither not the biggest nor the most famous museum in Taiwan, but it is the first city museum. And it did lead a new trend to know about our hometown escaping from the traditional exhibition. To display a city isn’t necessarily require lots of ancient relics, it needs to go through the interactive and friendly way to understand. After all, the existence of a city is present tense and only when we can touch it, it can awake our feeling.

That’s why there are people missing it , touched by it and want to explore it.
