In the early morning we arrived in Muzha Tea Exhibition Center , as soon as we entered, a cute little girl welcomed us in; she enthusiastically poured us a pot of tea to taste. Shu-Han Chang is a student in the fifth grade, she gets up early in the morning on the weekends to sell and promote different types of teas for her parents; we felt slightly ashamed thinking about it.

Fifth grade students being a volunteer on the weekends, explaining the pros and cons of tea.

Q: How many times a year can tea be picked?
A: The tea that can be used for tea is only picked three times: summer, winter, and autumn, the quality of summer tea is not good because of the hot weather.

A: Can you show us the different types of tea leaves?
A: Yes!

Shu-Han took out every type of tea for the volunteer dad to take pictures, and did a careful introduction and analysis, including:

  • Baozhong tea
  • Tieguanyin
  • Oriental Beauty
  • Oolong tea

She brewed each type of tea for us and taught us how to taste it, before drinking you need to first smell the aroma! While Shu-Han brewed the tea, she told us that Oolong tea is also called Oriental Beauty tea.

Wow, we gained a lot today.
Leisurely learning how to brew tea. .

The volunteer mothers immediately bought Wenshan Baozhong tea from Shu-Han, everyone said that Shu-Han was very impressive. At this location besides researching tea, we also were able to taste tea, we really got more then we bargained for!

Viewing Maokong in the morning, the mist has an indescribable beauty, I think every time we do a research project; going out into nature is also another bonus. Although Shu-Han Chang was very young, but she had a lot of tea related knowledge! At the end, the projection room had a film showing the uprising and downfall of the Muzha tea industry, we are very thankful and we cherish the hard work of the individuals in the past.

Simulated Rainfall splash erosion basins.
The demonstration tea garden showed us the importance of water and soil conservation.

A very kind looking volunteer tour guide Ms. Yue-Yen Chen, took us into the demonstration tea area, the wide grass lawn could not help but lift our spirits.

Suddenly we heard a strange yet delightful sound: “Kou, Kou, Kou!” the tour guide told us that it was the special call of the Muller’s Barber, it seemed to be welcoming us there. When we were visiting the first tree, we saw a very beautiful spider, the tour guide told us it was the very beautiful Agripe Aemula spider, the web it had spun was 3-dimensional, the little spider was the male, and the larger one was the female!

We organized the interview content from the tour guide as below:

1.       Water and Soil conservation is very important for the growth of tea trees.

2.       The simulated rainfall splash erosion basins were divided into three areas, the slope was around 16%, through the design of rainfall with equal strength, the water buckets below allowed us to clearly observe the soil and water loss situations when the earth has different covering methods.

3.       Because salinization of the water in Kaohsiung , the water cannot be drunk in Kaohsiung , lately it has been improved.

4.       Terrace fields are also called bench terraces, their function is to prevent the flow of rapid streams, maintain temperature and humidity, and they can also prevent debris flow caused by rain; farmers use this method to lower the costs of tea production.

5.       Because of the uncontrolled cutting, the rain cannot seep into the earth and become underground water; originally it took three days for the rain to flow from the mountain top to the bottom, now it only takes one day, so debris flow occurs easily.

6.       Golf courses are very un-environmental places, in order to maintain the beauty of the grass, it is necessary to use a lot of pesticides, they go from the underground water into the dams and tea fields, causing eutrophication, affecting the growth and quality of the tea!

7.       Because the temperature and landscape of Wenshan District, it is well known for its Baozhong tea; the Tieguanyin of Muzha District also has its own unique characteristics.

8.       The appearance of the Guanyin flower is very much like a rose, it is often mistaken by people.

9.       The earth can allow the positive ions to be releases from the body, so people living in the country often live longer.

10.    For water and soil conservation, the Tea Farmer’s Association will plant some grasses such as Bahia grass, Bermuda grass, and Carpet grass, etc.

See what kind of tea it is

Although we walked for over two hours, we did not feel tired at all; the knowledgeable tour guide taught us a lesson about the tea ecological environment. In the distant mountains were green hills of tea and on our trip a little crippled dog happily followed us around, we deeply felt the beauty of nature and how the animals and plants create a natural balance. On the way back, we really cherished each mouthful of tea, and each little tea leaf.

Everyone concentrating on what the tour guide was telling us.
The tea production machines helped us to understand tea more.
