Following the Dragons

　　To the Hakka in Miaoli, “welcoming the dragons” is not only a way of pursuing good fortune and avoiding misfortune, but also a celebration of the Lantern Festival. In early days when streetlights were not so prevalent, dragon teams usually illuminated streets with torches. People would carry lanterns and follow dragon teams from village to village. According to the custom, the Hakka believe following the dragons can help them absorb more “chi”, which brings luck and safety. Because people greatly enjoy the activity, it has become part of the culture.
