Water and Shezi Island

Wherever there is a river, there is a civilization. Like the Gange River of the Indus Valley Civilization, or the Nile River of the Egyptian Civilization, the Keelung River and the Danshui River play and important role in the founding of Shezi Island. Shezi is at the end of Danshui watershed, and this location brings the main reason of lots flood disasters.

In 1963, the Shihmen Reservoir was completed and began to serve fresh water supply, irrigation, hydroelectric power in Taoyuan County. In typhoon seasons, it released floodwater, and the plenty of water caused high flood levels, meanwhile, due to interactions of the narrow outfall pass at Guandu, the sea tide raised and caused overflow of flood-defenses. As we mentioned before, Shezi Island is located at the end of the watershed, the most low-lying areas in Taipei Basin, thus, it became the flood discharge region, suffered from flood disasters.

In 1987, the Feitsui Reservoir served water supply to Metro Taipei from the upper reaches of Danshui River, the Dahan River and the Xindian River. After that, the clean sand along the Danshui River was replaced the dirty muddy wetland. This influence of environment had changed its landscape and ecology in Shezi Island.
