The Funs in the Vegetable Garden

Standing on the protecting embankment, you are able to see a lot of spaces decorated with nets; these are called "Net Houses".   Uncle Su points out that it is because of avoiding the worm damage; then he has the vegetables to be planted in it.   But there rising a question in my mind: Isn't there no more worms because of this protection?   The answer is: of course not.

A Net house is with 190.12 M2 in scale; it costs NT dollars 400,000 for the space of 950.6 M2.  Uncle Lin has invested NT Dollars 600,000 prior to plant in his 1425.9 M2 Net house.  Because of the subsidy from the Farmers' Association to cover 40% in the equipments, it did let the Uncle Lin to release some burden on the cost.

The Net Houses in front of us
are one of the gardens counseled
by Farmers' Association.

Wowooo~
what a color green garden!!

So the Farmers' Association utilizes thebiological controlto protect.   This is the method to apply the features of worms to capture harmful insects.   The plastic bottles hanged in the Net houses are right the protecting devices, said by Uncle Su.

Way one is to have the yellow glue on the plastic bottles; color yellow is able to attract the Fruit flies to have them adhered on bottles and reach to the purpose of decreasing the density.

The bottle with yellow glue
adhered a lot of Fruit flies.
Uncle Su explained the
"biological control"theorem
in details; what I did is
to make notes seriously.

Way 2 is to apply the "pheromone" from female insect to capture the male one.  There is a tube loaded with pheromone in the "Insect Inducing Box" and cut its one end to let it released the smell to attract male insects within 5-meter scale to fly in.  Because of funnel design, "only in-no out" feature is able to attract the male insects to kill and decrease the quantity to mate and lay eggs.

According to the descriptions from Uncle Su,
the effect of box located outside the Net
House is better; but it is hard to be seen.

In order to kill the different insects, farmers use the different "pheromone" and various color boxes to verify.  The blue box is for  "Leaf Roller of Beta Vulgaris"and the red one is to capture the "Prodenialitura (Fabricius)".

The usage lifetime of one "female pheromone" tube is around 2 months.  In case the farmer is easy to forget about this; it is able to add the pigment in the tube in advance; then you are able to see the color change to decide to switch with a new one.   A "Insect Inducing Box" is only NT Dollars 43 and a "female pheromone" tube costs only ten bucks; its utility is let value to be best though these unit costs are cheap.

The "Insect Inducing Box"
in red is to capture the "Prodenialitura  (Fabricius)".

The red tiny tube Uncle Su hold
is loaded right with the
 "pheromone"from female insects.

All the bounty should be under the Bio-Test from Uncle Su of Farmers' Association in order to make sure to meet with the specification and to be sold into the supermarket.  97% of the revenues are belonged to be the Farmers; the balance 30% is applied to cover the marketing/fixed cost of Farmers' Association.

The farmers are assisted by Farmers' Association to arrange the categories; they use the ballot to decide which kind of vegetables as the first priority to plant and take turn to plant the different vegetables.  In summer, the main items are the amaranth and water celery; during winter, it is able to be seen the spinach and crown daisy.

There is only class with 15 members in producing-promotion class, which is assisted by LuJou Farmers' Association.  What the plant scale is 5.03 hectares; this includes the Net House is with 3.58 hectares and Outdoor section is with 1.45 hectares.   The farmers held meetings periodically in order to have questions discussion and experience interaction.  They also attend the fairs and seminars in order to improve their professional knowledge.

The packed Green river's vegetables
pass QC and then deliver to
the supermarkets of Taipei for sales.
