“Fawan” is a beautiful name. Surrounded by lush greenery and sounds of flowing water, under the tree’s shadows the old Vuvu keeps his bamboo pipe in his mouth and watches the children play. Around him, the rooftops of the slabstone houses lining the hills are glistening with the sun’s rays while the cycad’s songs drown out the of nose-flute tunes. Hunters who sat out at dawn have returned with their rich rewards, and their return is heroically celebrated by the villagers and hunt-dogs. Tonight the villagers will sing and dance till dawn.
This was the life for hundreds of years, but with the relocation from the Old Paiwan Village it has become an unrealistic lifestyle, but to keep memories alive many elderly people return again and again to this dreamland, so that they can walk on the ground over which they were born and set their eyes upon the place hidden in clouds and trees, before they die.

The Paiwan children of the new generation are clearly less attached to this place - it is hoped that through this project we can connect the Old Vuvu with the young E-generation children, so that forgotten memories may be revived again.

Preparing for the Night of Nostalgia (07/12/2006)
Recorded by:Cai-tou

Tomorrow will be Friday, December 8, a day that has been long in planning. We will take the students to spend an evening at our home far and away – Old Paiwan Village. From discussions, planning and confirmation to budgeting, fund-raising and arranging with chief and elders to organize accommodation and food, it has really taken loads of effort, but it will allow students to experience dinning in slabstone houses, eating aboriginal food and learn experiences from the Vuvu.? How to get to aboriginal villages, how to visit at the Chief’s house – there are so much we want to share with the students, so much has already been lost as the preservation of aboriginal culture has not received attention.? Although the revival will not occur with just one or two activities there has to be a starting point for this generation of students to feel, understand and build the belief, so that thought can become action. This is also what our school has been promoting for the past two years, and we hope that through hard work and by planning such activities the goal will be reached. I think the students are also finding it hard to fall asleep due to excitement, even though it is neither our first nor the second time but no fewer than 10 times to Old Paiwan, yet the home far and away still deeply attracts me. I pray to the gods of all religions, please allow the event to proceed smoothly and safely, under good weather
