Question 42:The highest cast-iron lighthouse in the Far East?

A:Mudou Lighthouse

Moudou Lighthouse is located at the Mudou Isle in the northernmost tip of Penghu archipelago. The place feature reefy and inaccessible landform. Around more than 50 ship wrecks happened before the lighthouse was built. The construction was a very difficult task, partly because there were no plants and fresh water, partly because the building materials were carried from other places. The lighthouse had been under construction since in 1899 and was completed in June 1902. The lighthouse is made of cast iron, and measures 39.9 meters high. It is the highest iron cast lighthouse in the Far East. In the beginning, the lighthouse was equipped with the kerosene lamp with the first class rotated lens, four-layer wick and 206,000 candlepower. The lighthouse flashed white light every twenty seconds. In 1910, the lighthouse was re-equipped with the kerosene incandescent lamp, which generated 500,000 candlepower.

During the second World War, the lantern, lamps and building are all ruined by bombs.

In 1947 after the Recovery of Taiwan, the lighthouse was re-equipped with the fifth-class temporary direct current electric flash lamp, which flashed thrice consecutively every twelve seconds with 3,000 candlepower light.

In 1964, the lighthouse was re-equipped with the new-type electric lamp with the fourth-class rotated lens. The lighthouse flashed every twenty second with 1,500,000 candlepower light automatically.

The isle was formed by rocks where there is no plant. The isle features small area and low terrain. Whenever fierce wind and waves strikes the land, it seems like pouring salty rain. The lighthouse keepers really live difficult lives there.

The lighthouse is equipped with two-way radio communications devices.
