Question 49 :The earliest lighthouse built in the Japanese Colonial Period in Taiwan?

A:Fuguei Cape Lighthouse

Fuguei Cape Lighthouse is located at Fuguei Cape in the northernmost tip of Taiwan. The lighthouse was originally called Fujijiao Lighthouse, and had been built since 1896. The lighthouse construction site measures 31,570 square meters, and was bought from one Tamshui resident Lin Wande. All the building materials were shipped from Japan by sea. The tower structure was completed by Tokyo Tanaka Iron Works in 1897. This eight-sided iron lighthouse measures 30 meters high and was painted in black and white horizontal bands. The lighthouse was equipped with the second-class kerosene lamp with the three-layer wick, shining 3,500 candle-power white fixed lighting at that time when it was built. The lighthouse was re-equipped with the kerosene incandescent lamp with 17,600 candle-power light in 1911.

The lighthouse was renamed to Fuguei Cape Lighthouse in 1927, and re-equipped with the white occulting-light electric lamp in 1930. The lighthouse blinked with five-second bright interval and five-second dark interval with 19,000 candle-power light.

The lighting equipment was destroyed during the World War II, and the body was corroded then. The lighthouse was demolished and replaced by a tetragonal steel-framed tower temporarily. This temporary lighthouse was equipped with the fifth-class direct current (DC) electric lamp, which blinked with five-second bright interval and five-second dark interval every ten minutes with 19,000 candle-power light.

The lighthouse was rebuilt with concrete material into octagonal shape, and still painted in black and white horizontal bands in 1962. The lighthouse was re-equipped with the small-size electric lamp with the three-class rotated lens. The lighthouse flashed twice per second with 1,500,000 candle-power light.

One first-class radio beacon, installed in 1973, had output power of 300 Watt and radio range of 200 nautical miles. The beacon was located with the radio beacons in Keelung for clear position identification over the sea.

One electric fog horn was installed in 1981.

The lighthouse is equipped with two-way radio communications devices.

  Height of Lighthouse: 14.3 meters

Height of light (above H.W.): 31.4 meters

  Nominal range: 26.8 nautical miles
