In
June, 2005, we went to the administration office of Martyrs'
Shrine. It was the chief, Colonel Chen Ching-Bo, who came
to welcome us. Colonel Chen was very glad to know that we
were doing a subject regarding the Martyrs' Shrine. However,
he reminded us that officers in the military have to obtain
permission from the supervisors in the Ministry of National
Defense to be interviewed. Therefore, under Colonel Chen's
guidance, we submitted official documents to Combined Logistics
Command, Army Command, Navy Command and Air Command. After
they gave us their consent, we started our research.
Colonel Chen retired this summer. The deputy chief, Lieutenant
Colonel Fan Jau-Rung, guided us through this research instead.
He was with us when we attended the September 3rd Autumn Memorial
Ceremony and finished the record of the Army's honor guard.
We shared a busy and meaningful summer vacation with him.
On January 1st, 2006, the Martyrs' Shrine was transferred
from the Combined Logistics Command to the Reserve Command.
The new chief of the administration section, Colonel Li Mou-Ji,
also assumed office on that day. In the final stage of completing
our web pages, we asked Colonel Li to proofread and retouch
the articles for us. Now, let us tell you the stories between
us and the senior officers in the administration section.

The Colonel Li was assigned as the chief of the administration
section of the Martyrs' Shrine in 2006. As soon as he assumed
office, he started going around inspecting the pillars, windows
and stairways in the shrine. We often saw that Colonel Li discussed
with other staff members while examining the wall in the corridor.
There is always a look of concentration on his face. Once, we
made a series of bookmarks of the scenic spots in the Martyrs'
Shrine to give to visitors who filled in our questionnaires.
After Colonel Li saw them and asked us what they were for, he
kept praising us for the beautiful handiwork. Besides hardworking,
he is a man of tenderness as well.
The Chief Counselor, Lieutenant
Colonel Huang Guo-Chih
Lieutenant Colonel Huang was very concerned about our progress
from the beginning. At first, he couldn't understand why we
asked so many questions. He thought we should just put more
features of the Martyrs' Shrine on the web. Later, when he
discovered that we were doing a good job on collecting information,
he gave us more on his own initiative. For instance, he told
us what the animals on the archway represent and how the honor
guard is trained. He even came out to join our class in the
square in the Martyrs' Shrine when the sentry in the guardroom
notified him every time we were there. We then asked Lieutenant
Colonel Huang all kinds of questions we had in mind. He should
be honored as the supervisor of our project.
Major Yang Jing-Shiang
There is a beautiful lady in the administration office. She
is Major Yang Jing-Shiang, who looks especially dashing in uniform.
Major Yang is responsible for the ceremony of offering sacrifices
to the martyrs and enshrining new ones. She answered lots of
our questions about the martyrs and the memorial ceremonies
in spring and autumn. Even when sometimes we crowded around
Lieutenant Colonel Huang's desk to look for related information,
she also volunteered to help us.
Mr. Liang Shing-Jian
Uncle Liang has worked at the Martyrs' Shrine since 1972. In
the past 34 years, he's personally involved in everything regarding
the shrine, be it the memorial ceremonies or the refurbishment
of the tiles. He took us to the back of the Martyrs' Shrine
to find the plinth of the old Jinja stone lamp forgotten in
the garden. He also disclosed that the sago cycads in front
of the bell tower were planted to ward off evils. From Mr. Liang's
explanation, we learned a lot of knowledge which can't be found
in books.
